Regrets of the dying When someone leaves our family, it is always challenging for those who remain. However, we can learn a lot from those who evaluate their lives at the brink of death. Although it’s not an easy topic, it is incredibly insightful and, unfortunately, very relevant for us... So I brought a post inspired by, Bronnie Ware, a palliative care nurse, shared powerful insights from her patients' final moments in her article, “Regrets of the Dying.” She asked them about their biggest regrets or what they would have done differently. These were the five most common themes: 1. I wish I’d had the courage to live a life true to myself, not the life others expected of me. 2. I wish I hadn’t worked so hard. 3. I wish I’d had the courage to express my feelings. 4. I wish I had stayed in touch with my friends. 5. I wish that I had let myself be happier. Reflecting on these regrets can inspire us to make meaningful changes in our own lives. Check the comments for five self-reflecting questions to help you live more authentically. . . . . . #LifeLessons #PersonalGrowth #BronnieWare #RegretsoftheDying #LiveAuthentically #PalliativeCare #LifeReflection

In traditional medical-directed care, doctors and nurses are in charge of their patient's care and many decisions can be made absent of the patient him or herself. This is not the case with person-centered care, where instead, relationships are enhanced and valued between caregivers and recipients of care by making decisions about daily routines, care, treatment and medications together. A study published in the New England Journal of Medicine states that patients with a severe illness who received palliative care lived longer than those who did not receive this care. Palliative care uses a team approach to support patients and their caregivers. This includes addressing practical needs and providing bereavement counseling. It offers a support system to help patients live as actively as possible. This team includes physicians, nurse practitioners, RNs, social workers, chaplains, and other spiritual leaders. Panic attacks can be scary and unpredictable, but there are several strategies to help you during this time. ❤️ Breathe in and out slowly. Some people find counting from 1-5 during each breathe in and out helps. 🖐 Pick up and touch items near you – focus on how they feel, are they heavy or light and what colour each item is. 🚶 Take a short walk – concentrate on your steps. Notice the rhythm of your footsteps. If you are experiencing panic attacks, further support is available. Speaking with your GP is a great starting point. If you are an expecting or new parent, speak with your midwife, Child Health Nurse or call ForWhen on 1300 24 23 22.
