One of India’s most efficient terminals is partnering with O2 Power to reduce its carbon footprint still further - by 44% - thanks to captive solar plant technology. Gateway Terminals India Pvt Ltd (GTI), also known as APM Terminals Mumbai, will have capacity to generate 22 million kWh of electricity annually and expects to meet 80% of its electricity requirements as a result of the alliance. Through the intra-state open access structure O2 Power will supply captive power to GTI from its solar plants in Maharashtra, enabling the terminal to transform its supply-chain operations. The Government of India has approved the PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana on 29th February, 2024 to increase the share of solar rooftop capacity and empower residential households to generate their own electricity. The scheme has an outlay of INR 75,021 crore and is to be implemented till FY 2026-27. The administrative approval was granted to the scheme vide Order No. 318/17/2024-Grid Connected Rooftop dated 16th March, 2024. Investors are pouring in money into the country’s renewable energy (RE) sector. Leading the charge are some of India’s largest conglomerates — Adani, Reliance Industries, Tata Power, JSW and Torrent —and an array of other players — ReNew, Avaada, WAA, Azure, Suzlon, Sterling and Wilson, KP Energy, Inox Wind, Ampules Solar. This is despite the high initial costs of the ventures and lingering techno-economic questions such as the incompatibility between the country's electricity grid infrastructure and the intermittent RE supplies. Crisil Ratings estimates that 50 GW of RE capacity could be added in the next two years with investments pegged at over Rs 3 trillion. The private sector is to lead this investment binge.
