Welcome to another episode of the Set to Lead Podcast. I am discussing a topic that often flies under the radar but has significant impacts on workplace dynamics: microaggressions. Specifically, I'll be examining the statement, "I don't see color," a phrase that, while well-intentioned, can inadvertently dismiss the unique experiences and challenges faced by people of color. In this episode, I'll explore how the phrase can affect team members, and provide practical advice for leaders who want to foster a truly inclusive environment. Whether you're a seasoned executive, a new manager, or simply interested in creating a more equitable workplace, this short commentary is for you. Join me as I comment on the subtle but powerful effects of microaggressions and learn how to replace well-meaning but misguided comments with behaviors that genuinely respects and acknowledges the diverse experiences of all employees. I am thrilled to announce the release of our latest podcast episode featuring two incredible guests, Rachel Vicente, cpc and Vanity Jenkins from Shifted Consulting. In this episode, they dive deep into the topic of authenticity and values in the workplace, particularly for women of color. Here are three key takeaways from this thought-provoking conversation: 1️⃣ Prestige and Organizational Values: Rachel and Vanity shed light on how the concept of prestige in companies is often rooted in the experiences of the majority, where "bigger is better" is the prevailing mindset. They discuss how this mindset can create systemic barriers that hinder the growth and alignment of individuals' values within the organization. This realization serves as an "aha moment" for many listeners, prompting them to question their workplace experiences and seek clarity on their values. 2️⃣ Authenticity and Alignment: The episode delves into the importance of creating spaces where authenticity is not only accepted but valued. Rachel and Vanity emphasize the need for organizations to embrace diversity and foster an environment encouraging individuals to bring their whole selves to work. By doing so, organizations can tap into the full potential of their employees and unlock creativity and brilliance that may otherwise be stifled. 3️⃣ Empowerment and Next Steps: The conversation also explores how individuals can navigate the journey of finding a job that aligns with their values. Rachel and Vanity provide guidance on how to reflect on personal values, identify moments of authenticity, and evaluate the alignment between individual values and organizational values. They also highlight the importance of coaching and support throughout this process, empowering listeners to make informed decisions about their next career steps. If you're ready to gain valuable insights into the intersection of authenticity, values, and workplace culture, this episode is a must-listen. Hey LinkedIn Fam, Today I want to share insights from Episode #1114 of the Elevate Construction Podcast. In this episode, I had a fascinating conversation with Katie about how to better integrate men and women in the workplace. Here are some key insights: Understanding Differences: Katie shared insights from the book "Eve," highlighting the evolutionary differences between men and women. One striking revelation was that women typically need more sleep than men—around 10 hours, compared to 8 for men, with variations depending on their cycle. Flexible Work Schedules: We explored the importance of recognizing these differences and implementing flexible work schedules. It's not just about gender; it's about understanding individual needs. Whether it's accommodating different start times or allowing for naps, we need to ask, "What do you need in your life to work effectively?" Compassion and Care: Katie emphasized that showing compassion and care for all employees—whether men or women—benefits everyone. Providing breaks, shaded areas, and better facilities translates to better work and ultimately benefits the bottom line. Recognizing Individual Needs: It's crucial to understand that everyone's body and needs are different. One size does not fit all. We must be specific, compassionate, and attentive to create a better workplace experience for everyone. A Call for Awareness: As we continue to learn and grow, let's not assume everyone is the same. Recognize the unique needs of each individual, and strive to create a more inclusive and understanding work environment. Dive deeper into our discussion and learn how you can create a more inclusive and supportive workplace. For the first episode of 2024 Dr Julie Humphreys FCIPD and Natasha Whitehurst welcomed Suzy Levy to the podcast. Suzy shared her top four big mistakes organisations can make in relation to diversity, equity and inclusion. Of course, we recommend listening to the whole episode, but we’re excited to share an overview with you. Let us know what you think in the comments below. 1️⃣ Lack of a structural, strategic approach Organisations tend to be event or employee led. If an organisation says diversity and inclusion is a strategic focus, then it should be treated in the same way as other strategic priorities. There are a number of things the strategy and plan should include; - Leadership support - Budget (including time, money and resources) - A D&I leader with specialist skills - Short, medium and long term plan - Data 2️⃣ Organisations that don't plan for the pushback. Employees will feel uncomfortable with a focus on diversity and inclusion. It’s perfectly normal for employees to ask why, or seek more insights and clarity. Suzy tells us ‘it is okay for individuals to fear that they might be left behind.’ To combat this we should hold up the data and have open conversations about the feelings colleagues are experiencing to create a space where people can articulate them. 3️⃣ Understanding how you increase workforce diversity Suzy feels that there are very few leaders who articulate this well and then they wonder why employees are confused, she discuss the three ways to increase workforce diversity: you either have to recruit more of a group, promote more of a group, or lose less of a group. Data is key to tracking and measuring this. 4️⃣ How to apportion time and energy. ‘If diverse people could fix some of the lack of equality in this world, they would have done it.’ If you try and do too many things you fail at many of them. Spending your time trying to fix diverse people doesn't gain you very much. Time needs to be spread proportionally to help your employees through the diversity and inclusion journey. By focusing on allyship and upskilling all colleagues you empower individuals with that capability and understanding and self-reflection. Suzy has 25 years of experience delivering change and is the Managing Director at THE RED PLATE LTD and also holds a variety of board-level roles. Like what you read and heard? In today's episode of Culture Leaders Daily, John Frehse and I delve into my recent conversation with Johnny C. Taylor, Jr., SHRM-SCP, CEO of SHRM. Johnny’s shift from DEI to I&D—dropping 'equity'—has sparked controversy. John and I unpack this bold move, exploring why it might be the necessary course correction for real progress. John emphasized a critical point: “Do you want to be right or do you want to win?” He noted that DEI has been failing locally and internationally. Major companies are removing their DEI teams because the initiatives haven't been effective. By focusing on inclusion and diversity, we can win now and address equity more effectively in the future. Join us weekly on Culture Leaders Daily as John and I discuss the latest trends in workplace culture, providing CEOs with actionable insights.
