Some really great thoughts on #Allyship from Carmen Leishman on behalf of the Veterans Workstream of the Diversity Project - Investment Industry. One point that particularly resonated with me "[veterans] will quickly demonstrate....how integral they can be to your bottom line and how integral they can be to your business". In my experience, whilst those leaving the military may not have experience of the investment management industry, their skillset and training allow them to integrate and add value far quicker than many expect. Allyship means giving veterans the opportunity and time to demonstrate these skills, that will ultimately benefit the businesses in which they work and the industry as a whole.
National Inclusion Week 2024 – Allyship What does allyship mean from a military veterans standpoint? For our veterans workstream allyship means the same as what allyship means to any individual. It's doing the right thing when no one's looking and standing up for and representing individuals when they need you to stand up. Listen to Carmen Leishman talk about how, although CVs from military veterans may appear different, they bring a different set of skills. Veterans can quickly upskill themselves to provide additional capabilities to businesses that are hard to find elsewhere, and need allies to take the time to understand those differences. Some veterans may need a bit of time to fit into an organisation as they may speak in a different way; however, they will very quickly demonstrate how integral they can be to the bottom line and how beneficial they can be to our businesses. It's good to see more of this happening in the UK. In the US, veterans and those who've served are given a good path into the private sector. In the UK, with some notable exceptions, this is unfortunately lacking. #1) GET YOUR RECORDS IN ORDER!! Get your #medical #records and service record sorted out. All of your #awards, your #schools, your #qualifications, etc etc. Do not leave anything out. AND MAKE COPIES!!! #2) Get on LinkedIn, and various social media forums, and follow the advice from top names in the #veteran world. You'll know who they are. Take their advice with a grain of salt and season it to flavor your life. #3) Finish up any qualifications you have, start taking #classes online, or apply for internships/skill bridge/etc. Start getting your feet wet with what you might wanna do after the military. It may not be the path you eventually go down, but, it doesn't hurt. Go ahead and get your associates thru a community college. Work on your PMP (or CAPM). You never know where it might lead. #4) Save every penny you can. Pay off every ounce of #debt you have. Unless you get another government job, paychecks are a little more sporadic. And, it makes it easier to decide what you're going to do. You don't have to take a less desirable position, just because it pays more, so that you can barely make the minimum payments on your debt. (Plus, being debt free is a huge stress relief in general!) #5) Semper Gumbi. Be Flexible.
