This is a simulation I made as part of my final-year project. It showcases how the Intelligent Driver Model implementation of an autonomous vehicle can stabilise traffic on a single-lane circular road. Initially, there are 30 regular vehicles on the road. Without any traffic control measures, the instability in traffic emerges, leading to a phantom traffic jam formation. At 150 s, a single autonomous vehicle is introduced. It eliminates the disturbance and enables a stable flow of vehicles. The Desired Velocity parameter of the AV is adjusted to determine its optimal value for maintaining the stability of the platoon. Finally, at 550 s the autonomous vehicle is removed to demonstrate how the traffic returns to its default, unstable state. IDM Traffic Simulator GitHub: https://lnkd.in/dzWyaHcG

These guys just won $1.05B in funding for what seems to me to be an interesting approach to autonomous vehicles. They're taking a "learning" approach where the vehicle learns as it goes, which seems to me a novel way to approach this problem. Despite the hype, autonomous vehicles on the open road are not progressing as fast as many predicted. This idea and approach seems like a useful way forward and I'm really curious as to what the effect on people's expectations are if you don't assume the car is fully capable right from the start. https://lnkd.in/dXWy_sR5

One of the many things I like about this presentation is that humans driving a car - like the captain of a ship - have many wider responsibilities that help make the drive safer. It made me wonder whether we should preferring the term “autonomous road driver” or “robo-driver” rather than AV to keep focus on this rounded perspective. It also humanises the challenges. AV = Automated or Autonomous Vehicle
