In celebration of the training we provide to those working within Ardent, we caught up with one of our apprentices Jayjay, who is currently completing his EAL Level 3 Diploma in Advanced Manufacturing and Engineering. When did you join and how do you balance your apprenticeship and work? "April 2021. I do a day at college for classroom learning and the rest of the time work in the production warehouse." Why did you join Ardent? "One of the main reasons I joined Ardent was due to the direction the company is going. I see so much potential and growth taking place, which I want to be a part of. Many other members of staff have worked themselves up through the company and I hope to do the same." What aspects do you cover in your role? "In my role, I am expected to set up the machines whilst also keeping up with regular dimensional checks. I have learned how to set up for jobs, how to read engineering drawings, and how to maintain a safety-first attitude. How do you find the people at Ardent? "I think everyone is so positive with very much a 'can-do' attitude. Barber-Nichols has officially launched its apprenticeship program, partnering with Warren Tech School. This program engages second-year students with hands-on learning experiences on lathe, mill, and grind machines. We currently have one student in our program and are excited to welcome Braden Stelley to the Barber-Nichols Team. When asked what Braden likes so far about working at Barber-Nichols, he shared the following: "The Hands-on training and in-depth explanation of the processes of good parts. Explanation of good attributes and daily tasks to be successful. Great Environment with amazing people who care for you and will take time to check in on you. Management takes time to check in on employees about work topics or how they are doing. Able to see a lot of sweet dogs on a day-to-day basis :)." This route is highly respected in engineering, allowing me to build a solid foundation and grow within the industry." What is a proud moment for you during your apprenticeship? "Receiving awards and recognition has been incredibly fulfilling. It's not just about acknowledging my progress but also seeing the value others place on my efforts. The support and mentorship from those passionate about nurturing potential have been crucial to my development." What are your hopes for the future? "Looking ahead, I aim to become more integrated into the business side of operations. Was an apprenticeship right for you? "Choosing an apprenticeship was a pivotal decision for me. It allowed me to immerse myself directly into CNC machining, providing me with hands-on experience that’s unmatched. This route has given me practical skills and foundational knowledge to grow my career in precision engineering." What is a proud moment for you during your apprenticeship? "A defining moment for me was when I helped to create the GEMBA form which was implemented into the business and has improved communication between management and the operators and has improved efficiency because by filling this out the operator knows what they need to do and consider while working on the job. So any issues can be solved sooner and the job can be completed in less time." What are your hopes for the future? "In the future, I aspire to become an advanced EDM engineer, leading projects that push the boundaries of what's possible in engineering.
