Yet, this perspective is increasingly outdated. In recent years, renewables such as #solar, #wind, #geothermal, and #hydropower, coupled with the energy storage capabilities of #LDES and #GreenHydrogen, have shown they are viable and have become an integral part of the global energy mix. The energy transition is moving fast - so staying in touch with global progress is really important for a small, open economy like New Zealand. To be honest, it can sometimes feel like we're struggling to keep up. So I was pleased to see this image of global hydrogen partnerships in a recent IRENA report. Based on the information reviewed, New Zealand seems relatively well connected for a country of our size - and well positioned to leverage our highly renewable electricity grid and significant untapped renewable energy resources. Green hydrogen will be one of the world’s key enablers toward full decarbonization. This sustainable energy source can serve as an energy carrier and offers a carbon-free substitute for fossil fuels, mainly natural gas, thereby providing the heavy industry and heavy-duty transportation sectors with a viable decarbonized alternative. The EU has embraced this renewable energy source as a vehicle to achieve its decarbonization target and has set the target to produce half of its hydrogen demand locally by 2030.   Based on its analysis, Arthur D. Little has concluded that a viable, cost-effective method for producing this future hydrogen demand in Europe will be through the use of offshore wind, as this energy source is natural, clean, and abundant.
