❌MYTH: “Renewable energy is unreliable and expensive” The #EUelections are approaching and GRA joins the Solar Impulse Foundation and Bertrand Piccard to debunk myths risking a shared clean, secure and just future. In an era marked by rapid technological advances and growing environmental consciousness, a persistent myth casts a shadow over the progress of sustainable energy: the notion that renewable energy solutions are unreliable, costly, and not ready for widespread use. Yet, this perspective is increasingly outdated. In recent years, renewables such as #solar, #wind, #geothermal, and #hydropower, coupled with the energy storage capabilities of #LDES and #GreenHydrogen, have shown they are viable and have become an integral part of the global energy mix. According to BloombergNEF’s Climatescope, Chile is the world’s most attractive Emerging Market economy for clean energy investment. Coal’s contribution to national electricity generation has fallen from 46% in 2013 to 23% in 2022, despite an increasing demand for energy in the country. A driver of this trend is the huge opportunity for solar and wind availability in the region. Supported by government legislation, renewable power has overtaken coal as a percentage of electricity generation. The nation plans to use this renewable power to become the world's leading low-cost exporter of green hydrogen. In today's market structure, there's no direct link between hydrogen production and International Renewable Energy Certificates (IRECs). However, as the green hydrogen market grows, new certificate schemes may become more prevalent to integrate it into energy systems effectively. Renewable #hydrogen Certificates (RHCs) could emerge to track green hydrogen's origin. Other incentives like carbon pricing or subsidies promote clean hydrogen production. It's important to note that IRECs certify renewable electricity generation, while hydrogen can be produced using various methods, including renewables or fossil fuels. Green hydrogen, produced from renewables, isn't directly tied to #IRECs.
