The Olympics and Paralympics are just around the corner. The main talk naturally is around how many medals India can win. One topic which often surfaces but should be completely avoided is comparisons between the Olympic and Paralympic medal tally of India. Not at all a fair comparison for many reasons. The progress markers for India to improve are the respective performances from Tokyo 2020. India won 7 (1 Gold) medals at the Olympics and 19 (5 Gold) medals at the Paralympics. Two real possibilities for Paris 2024 which I am super excited about are 1. India’s first female Olympic Gold medalist ! 2. Gold, Silver, Bronze in the same event on the Paralympic podium ! 🥈🥉 Guaranteed Medal 🥈🥉 Today’s post is going to be a short rant. And it’s a rant coming directly from my competitive, pro-sportsperson heart. I absolutely HATE the headline that contains the phrase “Guaranteed medal” #VineshPhogat won her way to a HISTORIC Olympic final, beating Japan’s Yui Susaki on the way. And the way this was reported on, even in the official streaming platform’s highlights package, is the screenshot I’ve given here. I understand that headlines and news articles need to convey as much information in as few words as possible. It’s a tough job to summarise so many events at the olympics. But still. Whenever an athlete wins a semifinal, they use this phrase “Guaranteed Medal” and I HATE it. And it’s cousin “1 win away from a medal” when a team reaches the semi-final. Meaning that we can lose also, but just need to win 1 to get at least the bronze medal. Which… absolutely grinds my gears. Why you ask? Because it really reflects on a mentality where we are okay with losing. Because we are guaranteed a medal. Atleast we got the silver. And that’s an achievement in itself. Yes, it is an achievement. But no, we shouldn’t be satisfied with it BEFORE THE FINAL! The justification offered is that for our country, even getting a medal is a big thing. And my response to this point is simple It will ALWAYS be that way unless we change our mentality about being okay with 2nd place &3rd place. There is no guaranteed medal. There is no guaranteed medal, because the only medal we should go for is the gold.
