"More sustainable packaging solutions are included in the total value bundle, along with nutritional benefits, cost value, and product quality", adds Darin Gregg, dairy market director for Winnipeg, Manitoba-based Winpak. "Plastic used in dairy packaging is quite sustainable", adds Gregg. “It functions in its role to protect the package contents in an effective manner and normally with the least amount of packaging. Further, plastics (versus other package materials) are low in greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and in overall resource use,” he says. Well said Darin!! 🙌 🙌 To read more of Darin's comments, check out the latest edition of the Dairy Foods magazine where leading industry experts discuss how packaging serves as a major piece of the sustainability puzzle. #Winpak #itsournaturetoprotect #sustainabilityexperts https://lnkd.in/gbpFev3n

Seize the opportunity: CSRD and the future of alternative proteins in food & beverage industry As leaders in the food & beverage sector, staying ahead of regulatory changes is crucial. The new Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD) is set to transform sustainability reporting across Europe. Starting in 2024, companies meeting certain criteria will need to report on non-financial metrics, including their environmental footprint. This is a game-changer for our industry. BGP consultant Gabrielė has written a comprehensive BGP insight on this topic. You can read the full article (https://lnkd.in/e79Ysvbc) for a deeper understanding, here is a breakdown of the key points: Why CSRD matters 📚 Expands reporting: Covers sustainability metrics beyond financial performance. 🌍 Broad impact: Affects approximately 50,000 companies, including major food & beverage players. 📦 Supply chain emphasis: Focuses on the environmental footprint across the entire supply chain. The role of alternative proteins ▪ Significant emission reductions: Substituting traditional animal-based ingredients with alternative proteins can drastically reduce greenhouse gas emissions, addressing Scope 1 (direct emissions) and Scope 3 (indirect emissions) emissions. ▪ Consumer demand: Aligns with emerging consumer preferences for sustainable options, enhancing brand reputation and loyalty. ▪ Regulatory compliance: Helps companies meet stringent sustainability criteria outlined by the CSRD. Future outlook By 2030, CSRD is expected to lead to more transparent, comparable, and reliable sustainability information. This shift will drive industries toward sustainable practices, setting a global benchmark for sustainability reporting. Companies that adapt now will be the sustainability leaders of tomorrow. 🌱 Cyclodextrins: The Unsung Heroes of Sustainable Packaging 🌱 As the demand for eco-friendly and sustainable packaging continues to grow, innovative solutions are emerging—one of the most promising being cyclodextrins. These remarkable ring-shaped molecules, composed of glucose units, bring a host of benefits that make them ideal for the packaging industry. Here’s why they are rapidly gaining attention: ✨ Controlled Release: Cyclodextrins can encapsulate active ingredients such as fragrances, flavors, or preservatives, slowly releasing them to extend shelf life and maintain product freshness. 🌿 Biodegradability: As biodegradable molecules, cyclodextrins provide a natural alternative to synthetic materials that linger in the environment for centuries. 🦠 Antimicrobial Properties: With the ability to inhibit the growth of harmful microorganisms, cyclodextrins help preserve food and beverage products, reducing spoilage and contamination risks. 💧 Moisture Control: By absorbing excess moisture, cyclodextrins prevent mold and fungi growth, helping to extend the shelf life of products. 🌍 Environmental Friendliness: Derived from renewable sources like corn or potato starch, cyclodextrins offer a greener alternative to traditional packaging materials. One innovative application is using alpha-cyclodextrin as a carrier for 1-MCP, a plant growth regulator that extends the shelf life of fruits and vegetables. This approach not only simplifies the application process but also enhances the efficiency and stability of 1-MCP, proving that cyclodextrins can play a crucial role in sustainable food preservation. As more companies seek environmentally conscious packaging solutions, cyclodextrins are set to play an ever-greater role in shaping the future of packaging across industries. 🚀 The future of packaging is here—and it's green. #Sustainability #Innovation #Cyclodextrins #Packaging #FoodPreservation #EcoFriendly #GreenPackaging #Biodegradable
