Energy, Sustainability, and Technology #Energytalks2024 I attended a seminar on Energy, Sustainability, and Technology, hosted by Mr. Wille Erola, Chairman of the Finland Pakistan Business Council. The discussion on energy technologies, production, and consumption, was led by Alexandre, Director for the Middle East at Wartsila. While the session was moderated by Faseeh Mangi from Bloomberg. Daish Iqbal, CEO of Gul Ahmed Energy, provided an insightful analysis of Pakistan’s energy challenges. Mr. Jani representing Biowoima, Finland, delivered a compelling presentation on biomethane and biogas plants. Their plants have the ability to turn organic waste and side streams into revenue by cost-effectively converting them into renewable energy and fertilizers. The products can be used to generate electricity or heat or processed further to make biomethane, which can be used as a transportation fuel or as a substitute for fossil gas in natural gas networks. The opportunities for scaling are practically endless. H.E. Mr. Hannu Ripatti, the Ambassador of Finland to Pakistan, also expressed his thoughts on the seminar and his satisfaction with the accomplishments of the Finland Pakistan Business Council. Another notable participant in the panel discussion on Sustainability and Urbanization & Infrastructure was my dear friend Saif Mohidatt, Head of Sales for KONE Middle East. He shared KONE’s contributions to sustainability in the elevator industry. For vertical format structure, KONE offers highest energy efficiency rating elevators and escalators. Now, regarding the outcome of the seminar, my perspective is that third-world countries face a distinct set of priorities. Our region grapples with numerous challenges, including economic constraints, continuous political instability, institutional corruption, public awareness issues, and climate vulnerability. Addressing these challenges and establishing the right priorities is crucial for sustainable development in third-world countries. For Phase I of ALERT, a study on ASEAN’s long-term strategy for low-carbon hydrogen and ammonia will be conducted, that aims to map out the development of new emerging low-carbon technology, specifically low-carbon hydrogen and ammonia and the potential role it could play as a long-term strategy for the decarbonisation of the ASEAN energy sector. As low carbon hydrogen is still in the early development stage in ASEAN, the study is expected to help identify the role of hydrogen (and ammonia to the extent) for one of the long-term decarbonisation options in the region, considering the diversity of resource availability and unique energy landscape in ASEAN Member States.
