COVID is not over for the immunosuppressed, long-COVID patients (with increasing evidence of a virus reservoir), and we need to get ready for a next SARS-like virus, given we had 2 outbreaks in 20 years. Patient work has been ongoing VIB-UGent Center for Medical Biotechnology and ExeVir to engineer a cocktail consisting of 2 antibodies with unique mechanisms of action that have resisted all SARS-CoV-2 evolution under human immune pressure sofar. 🎤 International Conference At #Patrys, we are always excited to learn of the promising potential of our deoxymab technology in new areas of clinical need. This week, we are pleased to announce that new data from preclinical studies using PAT-DX1 in animal models of anti neutrophil cytoplasmic antibody (ANCA) vasculitis will be presented at the 21st International Vasculitis Workshop in Barcelona next month. Dr Kim O’Sullivan from Monash University will present on recent preclinical studies that demonstrate the potential to improve treatments for autoimmune diseases like ANCA vasculitis, an inflammatory condition caused by the buildup of of activated neutrophils and neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs) in small blood vessels. Current treatments increase the risk of infections, highlighting the need for safer therapies. Meeting a unique team was such an honour! ARTHEx Biotech is an EIC Accelerator beneficiary, based in Spain. I met this dynamic and hard working team at their premises in Valencia, where the heart of the company is beating, modulating microRNAs and developing innovative medicines, tailored to patients’ specific needs. EIC Accelerator blended finance is awarded for the development of a brand new treatment to Myotic Dystrophy Type 1 (DM1), an orphan disease affecting more than 900,000 people worldwide (estimated prevalence 1/8,000). This condition has currently no cure, and no approved treatment. A first-in-class disease modifying therapy, ATX-01, developed by ARTHEx, addresses the cause of DM1 with a dual and unique mechanism of action, which targets micro-RNA-23b a key factor in the disease pathogenesis. ARTHEx biotech is a spin-off biotech company from the University of Valencia. They have grown from 1 person in 2019 when the company was founded to a team of 20 right now. The EIC Accelerator grant is used to support Phase I/IIa clinical trial of ATX-01 for DM1. beatriz llamusi PhD, CSO & Co-Founder of ARTHEx biotech mentioned: “This grant empowers us to bridge the gap between foundational scientific research and clinical application, driving the development of ATX-01 for DM1. With its dual mechanism, we're confident in our potential to set a new standard in treatment within the DM1 space.”   It is simply amazing to see European players raising up to their potential to bring best-in-class treatments in the global fight against rare diseases. "AI will be assisting pathologists, not replacing them". Hearing about the struggles of the local disease diagnostics industry, particularly the very manual nature of pathology, from Daniel Lim of VIDANEX, it seemed only natural to progress towards digitisation; but I was surprised by how far behind Malaysia and the region is in this regard. The incorporation of AI to optimise bio-based workflows is a no-brainer. Faster, more accurate disease diagnoses = more lives saved. While further research needs to be done to validate the tech, if anyone would get there soon, it would be this Bio-Based Accelerator company. #biotech #AImedicaldevices
