New paper alert! 📰 In our new paper we show that we can efficiently estimate nearshore incoming infragravity wave conditions at large spatial scales 🌊 In this study, we show that using an efficient stationary wave energy solver with parameterized infragravity source term it is now possible to estimate the nearshore IG wave conditions for 500+ kilometers of coastlines in the order of seconds, that is not possible with existing process-based wave-resolving models. 🚀 Find it open access here: https://lnkd.in/dWDacg9s We have implemented the methodology in the fast wave spectral model #SnapWave of Dano Roelvink, that is internally coupled in #SFINCS to enable fast wave-driven compound flood modelling. 🚤 More on that in upcoming releases and case studies of #SFINCS, and conferences like #EGU2024! This is my 3rd paper as part of my PhD at IVM Institute for Environmental Studies VU Amsterdam in collaboration with Deltares. 🎓 Many thanks to my co-authors Maarten Van Ormondt, Ap van Dongeren, Jeroen Aerts & Sanne Muis for their invaluable contributions 🙏. #infragravitywaves, #wavemodeling, #computationalefficiency, #extremeevents, #floodrisk

🌍 Exciting News in Global Groundwater Modeling! 🌊 Thrilled to share the groundbreaking release of the GLOBGM v1.0 dataset, a remarkable achievement in understanding global groundwater dynamics. Developed by Jarno Verkaik et al., this dataset represents a significant milestone in the field, offering a comprehensive view of groundwater behavior at an unprecedented spatial resolution of approximately 1 km at the Equator. Utilizing a parallel implementation of a 30 arcsec PCR-GLOBWB-MODFLOW model, GLOBGM v1.0 leverages two model layers and the MODFLOW 6 framework, powered by available 30′′ PCR-GLOBWB data. This enables researchers worldwide to delve into groundwater flow dynamics on a global scale like never before. This release marks a significant leap forward in global groundwater modeling, empowering researchers, policymakers, and stakeholders to make informed decisions and address pressing water resource challenges. Let's harness the power of GLOBGM v1.0 to drive innovation and sustainability in water management worldwide! Indeed - and these serious considerations must include the resilience of buildings to withstand harsh conditions and at least occasional energy shortages. One of the essential elements to achieve this is to increase the energy self-sufficiency of the buildings, facilitated by the lowest possible consumption - why not with a carbon sequestrative solution?
The Golf stream (#AMOC) may collapse already before 2050, and cause a strong decrease in temperatures of Northern Europe. This new Dutch research suggests a 59% likelihood for such a scenario. And a 95% certainty for the collapse of AMOC by the end of the century. These are important (and serious) future considerations for #building designers and #city planners. They not only affect the operational #energy use in the long run, but also several aspects of structural energy #efficiency. Furthermore, energy #sufficiency could become a major issue. This would raise the importance of managing and reducing embodied energy of the built environment, to complement the quest of lowering embodied #carbon emissions. These two are not fully synergistic. Strong #climate action is truly needed!
