Have you met Nori, the green turtle? 🐢 Nori is undergoing the final phase of rehabilitation with our Turtle Conservation Centre. During this time, the larger space of the I&J Ocean Exhibit serves to reacclimate Nori to what life is like in the ocean. She also receives environmental enrichment and behavioural observations. Soon, Nori will be ready for release back into the ocean! 🩵

#SundaySpecies The Humpback whales: a conservation success story 💙🐋 Humpback whales were brought to the brink of extinction by commercial whaling by the mid-20th century. However, through concerted conservation efforts, including the establishment of marine protected areas, and various national and international legal protections, their populations have significantly rebounded. This exemple shows that coordinated efforts can save marine life. This is why, through many initiatives, the #OceanDecade aims to foster global cooperation for ocean. Fisheries and Co-management expert (Currently Working at World Wide Fund for Nature - WWF Institute- Tanzania)
Did you know that these marine mammals are highly migratory and normally sail along Tanzania water between July-September each year on their way to southern area of the Indian ocean!? The Humpback are toothless and are filter feeders! Giving birth mostly to one calf and very layer (more than one), they breast feed their calves for 6-10 months, and provide some parental care including protection from predators. These wonderful marine mammals attain maturity at an average of 5-7 years, and give birth after every 1-3 years, whereby for a female individual knomaly undergo a gestation period of 11-12 months! Lastly they have a lifespan of 40-50 years based on the nature of external wild environment whereby there are plenty of threats and requires the survivability of the fittest

Join us for Sea Secrets with Rebecca Gruby, March 19, 2024. Gruby is a professor in the Department of Environmental Science and Policy at the Rosenstiel School and Director of the Johnson Center for Marine Conservation. About: We have entered a new era of marine conservation. In 2005, less than 2% of the world’s oceans were conserved in marine protected areas. Today, 8.17% of the world’s oceans are formally protected, with 44 large-scale marine protected areas accounting for a majority of this increase. Large-scale marine protected areas can provide unique conservation benefits by encompassing biologically connected ecosystems and habitats not often included in smaller, coastal marine protected areas. Yet, they pose significant implementation challenges, ranging from surveillance and enforcement to budget and capacity shortfalls and shifting political climates. This presentation will draw from a decade of social science research to explore the unprecedented promise and challenges of the global experiment with massive marine protected areas. It will conclude with a forward-looking discussion of how the newly established Johnson Center for Marine Conservation will advance policy-relevant research on large-scale marine protected areas and other critical marine conservation issues in our region and around the world. Many of us are best acquainted with our oceans from our perspective on the beach, where shorebirds, like the Wilson’s Plover, skitter about and Black Skimmers fly overhead, as illustrated here by Chris Vest. We can hardly imagine the vastness of the world's oceans, much less experience them as a seabird does, traveling thousands of miles over open water each year. But oceans are much more than the tiny slivers most of us experience at their edges. Oceans — from sandy beaches to deep-sea environments — are habitats. Support ABC's Marine Program in our efforts to research and implement strategies for seabird and shorebird conservation by visiting https://bit.ly/46jcl9v.
