The UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development will deliver the science we need for the ocean we want.

À propos

The United Nations Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (2021-2030) (Ocean Decade) will stimulate ocean science and knowledge generation to reverse the decline of the state of the ocean system and catalyse new opportunities for sustainable development. The vision of the Ocean Decade is ‘the science we need for the ocean we want’. The Ocean Decade provides a convening framework for scientists and stakeholders from diverse sectors to develop the scientific knowledge and the partnerships needed to accelerate and harness advances in ocean science to achieve a better understanding of the ocean system, and deliver science-based solutions to achieve the 2030 Agenda. The UN General Assembly mandated UNESCO's Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC) to coordinate the preparations and implementation of the Decade.

The #OceanDecade welcomes the Tangier Declaration, through which African countries committed to strengthen their cooperation for the sustainable use of marine resources. Issued at the 3rd Session of the High-Level Conference of the Blue Belt Initiative last week, this declaration also highlighted the need to enhance Africa’s contribution to global ocean science through the Ocean Decade. The Ocean Decade Africa Roadmap aims to support ocean experts across Africa, and has identified priorities for efficient investments in science-based solutions that truly respond to the needs of African stakeholders. 👉 Read the Tangier Declaration: https://ow.ly/LcSf50TNoTV 👉 Download the Ocean Decade Africa Roadmap: https://ow.ly/j4vi50TNoTT

Due to climate change, commercial fishing and other human activities, penguins are one of the most endangered seabirds in the world. To protect them, we need to better understand and better manage their home: Antarctica and the Southern Ocean. 🐧 But we still know very little about this remote region. This is why, as part of the #OceanDecade, several international institutions have joined forces under the leadership of the Alfred-Wegener-Institut, Helmholtz-Zentrum für Polar- und Meeresforschung to launch Antarctica InSync, an international programme for coordinated research and observations in the region. This week, as the annual meeting of #CCAMLR, the international body charged with conserving Antarctica’s Southern Ocean, is underway, see how Antarctica InSync will help to generate the data and knowledge needed to protect this precious ecosystem and the species who depend on it: https://ow.ly/JynE50RoaXv

#WorldFoodDay | How can we ensure that the ocean continues to sustainably nourish the global population? The ocean has nourished us for thousands of years, and billions of people rely on it for food and livelihoods. But the ocean's ability to feed us is now threatened by climate change, pollution, overfishing, and biodiversity loss. As part of the #OceanDecade Challenge 3 on sustainable blue food, scientists from around the world are researching how to optimise the role of the ocean in sustainably nourishing the world’s population. This knowledge has been captured in the #Vision2030 White Paper on Challenge 3, which outlines a set of recommendations to sustainably nourish the global population. 👉Download it here: https://ow.ly/OBgG50TLXfh
