Get a preview of the new issue of the SAE International Journal of Connected and Automated Vehicles by reading this free #openaccess article from within! Be sure to follow our page to get an update when the full issue is released. "The built environment confounds. [...] Leading experts argue that the compounding challenges in the urban environment represent 'the hardest form of warfare.' New technologies may assist." This is what authors Peter Hofer (Theresianische Militärakademie, Austria) and Charles Knight (Charles Sturt University, Australia) argue in their article titled, "Conceptualizing an Urban Operations Vehicle within a Comprehensive Research and Development Program." As military operations increasingly occur in urban environments, specialized uncrewed or autonomous vehicles can potentially reduce the cost of war on human life. Development of these vehicles for challenging subterranean or interior environments has been slow, however this frontier can be promising toward that ultimate goal. In their article, Hofer and Knight document the development for a concept uncrewed urban operation vehicle (UOV), and they go even further by defining the parameters for a prototype vehicle of this kind. Visited #GoMentum station today for a Contra Costa Transportation Authority (#CCTA) Citizen Advisor tour given by #TimHaile. (Thanks Tim!) This 5,000 acre former Navy Munitions Base is the perfect test grounds for the autonomous vehicles. Nearly all zones (10) were actively testing. Though we could not take pictures, we saw vehicle testing in a “neighborhood” and toured through a “downtown.” Having this test site in the backyard of Silicon Valley is remarkable, one of two non-private sites in the US for testing. Once tested, Level 4+ autonomous vehicles must pass all the tests at the Ohio Highway Transportation for open road approval. Levels of autonomy: Level 1 - minimum driver assist such as cruise control (most cars) Level 2 - driver assistance such as lane drift feedback (ie. Tesla) Level 3 - requires a driver to intervene when conditions require (ie Beep!) Level 4 - highly autonomous, driver is not required (ie Waymo) Level 5 - highly autonomous, driver not required, and vehicle can go everywhere, under all conditions (2035?) Excited to support #CCTA’s planned development and partners in this space. It is a safety focused, revenue generating, economy boom for the county. A win-win-win. This transportation agency is fully leveraging this gem in their backyard, helping advance the Future of Mobility.
