Are you cooking up a special dinner today? One of the metaphors I use for Indigenous inclusion in the workplace is of a dinner party. When you're going to host people to your home for a meal, typically you make sure you have enough room around the table, place settings, check in about your guests' allergies or dietary restrictions and set aside enough time to feed and visit with everyone. If some of those aspects aren't covered off, people might come, but they might not stay as long as you hoped if they aren't comfortable or don't have what they need. Inclusion in the workplace is about setting up your space to welcome Indigenous staff, ensuring they can work comfortably, considering their needs so that hopefully they come and like at a well-planned dinner party - they stay for dessert! This can look like reviewing your employment policies to see if they are inclusive, reflecting on if requirements in your job postings (like degree requirements) are true needs or stand-ins for something bigger (breadth and depth of experience, commitment to see a goal through to completion) that could be achieved through other life or professional experiences, allowing for candidate's cultural and ceremonial needs during the recruitment process and training your staff in cultural competency so the workplace is warm and welcoming. “Lead a modern day workplace”. I find myself saying that a lot lately. This week I’ve heard two phrases from leaders in my consideration of playing the infinite game of continuous improvement. “HR should be putting points on the board”. “While leading a workplace and studying all kinds of numbers, when we talk about the people who do the work it all comes down to culture”.
