Why Community Matters: Lessons from Hurricane Helene After Hurricane Helene struck Florida, the devastation on Anna Maria Island was overwhelming. Homes were flooded, belongings destroyed, and lives were turned upside down. But amidst the destruction, something incredible happened—community. Strangers became allies, neighbors became friends, and volunteers showed up from near and far. I met Sasha, a resident whose home was submerged under three feet of water. Like many others, she lost almost everything. But through the support of her community, she didn’t have to face it alone. Volunteers, local residents, and community organizations worked together, demonstrating the power of connection in times of crisis. This experience highlighted the key roles community plays: Belonging: We all need a place where we feel supported. Support network: Communities provide strength and resilience during difficult times. Mental well-being: Being part of a supportive network can ease stress and anxiety. Purpose: Volunteering and helping others can provide a sense of accomplishment and meaning. In challenging times, community is the backbone that helps us rebuild, find hope, and move forward. Thank you to everyone who reached out to check in after Hurricane Helene, knowing I’m in North Carolina. I appreciate the concern. The area where I live did not sustain much damage. Unfortunately, the same cannot be said for Western NC, which was hit particularly hard. 💔 By now, many of you have likely seen the heartbreaking photos and videos. Recovery in the area will take days, weeks, months, maybe even years. Many roads remain impassable, and access to essential resources like food and water continues to be a challenge. I wanted to share some resources, in the hope that they will be helpful for those looking to assist or find aid during this time: ▶ You can utilize NC 211 if you are looking for someone or if you want to request a welfare check. NC 211 is an information and referral service provided by United Way. It is a member of the State Emergency Response Team. You can dial “211” to reach a call specialist. ▶ NC Department of Public Safety (DPS) has put together storm-related resources. They include things like county information, up to date info about remaining power outages and how to apply for FEMA’s Individual Assistance Program. I’ll put the link in the comments below. ▶ NC State Extension has put together resources on their NC Disaster Information Center page. I will put that link in the comments as well. ▶ For anyone else in the Triangle, the News & Observer has put together a list of local businesses and organizations that are collecting donations. Can you elaborate on 'free" telemedicine visits. If I understood correctly on a previous advertisement for the kit/s , one must purchase it before the consult. If one is allergic to any of the medications or some of the meds are contraindicated it will not be replaced/substituted yet the person still has to pay full price. We have already created antibiotic resistance by over prescribing them. What safety checks do you have in place to avoid this issue.

In light of the increasing frequency of natural disasters, Walmart's recent initiative to deploy disaster response mobile units is commendable. These units, operated by skilled nonprofit professionals, have already significantly impacted Northwest Arkansas, offering essential services like hot meals, clean laundry, hot showers, and charging stations with Wi-Fi.   Walmart's proactive approach, driven by a strong sense of corporate responsibility, provides immediate relief and strengthens community resilience, demonstrating the power of businesses in action.   This is a prime example of how companies can make a meaningful difference and build stronger connections with the communities they serve.    As businesses, if we promote initiatives that help communities thrive, we contribute to those communities' social and economic well-being, build a more substantial, loyal base, and create a positive impact that enhances our corporate reputation. #business #community #companies #RSE #social #responsibility

On the heels of Hurricane Helene and Hurricane Milton, we know impacted communities face a long road of rebuilding and recovery. And for our neighbors experiencing homelessness and housing insecurity, particularly for those who are Black, Indigenous, and other people of color, the path to recovery is faced with additional hardships and disparities. Philanthropy has an obligation to address the both/and of short-term needs to provide safety and protection for people who have been impacted and the long-term response aimed at rebuilding in ways that prioritize the needs of those who are left out of equitable access to recovery efforts. Good Monday everyone. It looks like it's going to be another week dominated by weather issues. Between the heat and Hurricane Beryl's visit midweek, it's probably a good time to make sure that your nonprofit emergency plans are clear and known to everyone who works with you. Just in case. Also, a reminder to trim activities where possible to avoid heat-related injuries. Take frequent breaks. Keep everyone hydrated, and if you are walking pets (yours or as a volunteer) make sure that the pavement or sidewalks aren't too hot for those delicate foot pads. We're going to reshare the heat injuries graphic and remind you to monitor yourself and others in your team, your office and your neighbourhood. If things go sideways, we have more than 165 volunteers ready to clear trees and help clean up after a mess.
