It was a privilege to attend a Parliamentary Friends of Women in Sport event earlier this week celebrating our Paris Olympians and Paralympians, and in particular our women who brought home 13 of our 18 gold medals from the Olympics. The event was perfectly timed to coincide with the Albanese government’s announcement of the National Gender Equity in Sports Governance Policy, which will mandate that National Sporting Organisations must have a 50/50 gender split on their boards or risk losing federal funding. This Policy is a welcome step towards increasing diversity within sports adminstration in Australia. Currently, many boards—particularly national ones—have strict eligibility criteria, often requiring several years of prior board experience. To meet this important gender equity target, boards will need to rethink these requirements and make leadership positions more accessible to individuals who may not have traditional board experience but bring a wealth of other valuable skills and lived experiences. Recognising lived experience is a crucial pathway to achieving gender equity in governance. I admire Netball Australia's forward-thinking approach in appointing Liz Ellis to their board. By leveraging her extensive experience as an international netballer, they’ve enriched their board’s perspective and are better positioned to drive meaningful outcomes for the sport. This is a great example of how organisations can benefit from valuing diverse forms of expertise beyond traditional board experience. With the 2024 Olympics more than halfway over, we applaud the women of Team USA who are leading the medal tally– winning more than double the number of gold medals as compared to their male counterparts. Like many tuning in this year, we feel inspired watching superstars like Simone Biles and Katie Ledecky make history. It also reminds us of the integral role sports has played in the lives of our all-female team and the powerful link between women, sports and leadership. We’re reminded of a Deloitte study that found that 85% of women who played competitive sports in their youth are more likely to be in leadership or management roles. And we applaud those that are leaning into this space– like Monarch Collective, the $100 million fund from Kara Nortman and Jasmine Robinson focused on accelerating equity in global sports, and Angel City FC, the Los Angeles-based National Women’s Soccer League team—and the first majority female-owned professional sports franchise in the U.S. From resilience to communication to teamwork to problem-solving, our team has learned many valuable lessons in playing sports that have contributed to our career growth and leadership. We’re glad to see all the enthusiasm for #womeninsports and the discussion about the importance of it – on and off the field. #Paris2024 #Olympics

Episode Title: 🇬🇧Pioneering Women Transformed the Beautiful Game of Football🇬🇧 Today on Heads Talk, we are honoured to feature a remarkable & highly respected guest for the #HTSportsSeries. Through my research, I have been impressed by her achievements, especially during a time when women's football was not as popular or welcomed as it is today. She played a pivotal role in elevating the game to its current stature, truly a visionary & deservedly recognised for her 32-year contribution to the game. Barclays Women's Super League Hall of Fame Inductee #HallOfFame Kelly Simmons OBE, who recently took up the role of The Football Association Director of Women’s Professional Game, has been pivotal in transforming professional women’s football in England. She masterminded the first FA Women’s Professional Game Strategy, which has driven the growth of the Barclays Women’s Super League and Barclays Women’s Championship, culminating in record-breaking sponsorship & media rights deals for women’s football. Previously, as The FA Director of Development, she oversaw the implementation of a £200 million, 4-year investment programme into children’s & grassroots football. The attendance of men at women's football games was discussed. I invite contributions in the comments on this question: As a man, have you attended a women's football game? In the vast expanses of change that sweep through the landscapes of industries far and wide, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia stands as a beacon of progress and inclusivity. As we traverse this era of transformation, where diversity and inclusion are not merely goals but the very foundation upon which the future is built, it is heartening to witness the burgeoning realm where women are not just participants but pioneers. Football, a domain once thought to be the exclusive bastion of men, is now a testament to the indomitable spirit of women who are carving out their space with grace and fervor. In this narrative of change, it is a profound moment to note that there are now 1,100 female football players who have aligned their destinies with the beautiful game, registering with clubs across the leagues, honing their skills in three regional training centers, and representing the Kingdom with pride in four active national teams. As the Kingdom sets its sights on diversity and inclusion, it is the story of these women, their journey on the football fields, that reminds us of the power of embracing change and the beauty of diversifying the narrative of sports. #WomenInFootball #SaudiArabia #DiversityAndInclusion #FootballForAll #EmpowermentThroughSport #ChangingTheGame #FutureIsFemale

Wonderful to have a whole hour to explore the media coverage of women's sport, and the systems that enable and inhibit it. Who better to do that with than Richelle Hunt, Sarah Styles, & Clare Hanlon on Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC)'s The Conversation Hour? If you're keen to understand the opportunity that exists for the sport ecosystem to enhance our communities through story telling, give it a listen.
Great to join Richelle Hunt on ABC Radio’s The Conversation Hour yesterday, discussing the impact of the #MediaGap alongside Chyloe Kurdas and Clare Hanlon. Only 15% of sports news available in Victoria focused on women’s sports in the year leading up to last year’s FIFA Women’s World Cup, impacting the ability to deliver equality in sport and beyond.

"We predict that women’s elite sports will generate global revenues in excess of €1.1 billion in 2024. Football will be the most valuable women's sport, with revenue of over €500m expected to be generated worldwide in 2024. " Interesting report from Deloitte investigating the commercials of Women's European Football...I would love to see a comparison to the USA in here (or somewhere else) too!
