Wetlands include some of the most carbon-dense ecosystems in our planet, such as salt marshes, sea grass beds and mangroves. Peatlands, that account for just 3% of the world’s land surface, store twice as much carbon as forests, playing a pivotal role in delivering global commitments on climate change, sustainable development and biodiversity. Wetlands also help reduce disaster risk, as they mitigate floods and protect coastlines. Despite their essential role in global climate regulation, wetlands remain undervalued by policy and decision-makers in national plans. Approximately 35% of the world’s wetlands were lost between 1970-2015 and the loss rate is accelerating annually since 2000. Let's protect wetlands.

It is always great and fulfilling to see locally based tribal organizations thrive to bring about change in their conservation efforts. The Apunepara Ha'amwaora Natural Resource Association (AHNRA) in South Malaita is one of the many SCALE-NRMs projects funded by USAID to protect focusing on conservation. AHNRA protects terrestrial forest and mangrove ecosystems by addressing population growth, overharvesting, and threats from unsustainable activities. The tribe is pursuing Protected Areas recognition, ecotourism, and a carbon trade program. #usaid, #scalenrm, #winrockinternational, #conservation

It is encouraging to see voluntary Contracting Parties of the Council of Europe coming together to collaborate on preparing the reporting of conservation status of habitats and species protected under the Bern Convention. Conservation efforts can have a more coordinated and effective approach, specially monitoring is key for this effective approach.
