"I receive more and more calls each year from landowners inquiring about their seedlings having a “funny” look or appearing to look like “little bushes.” Inevitably, after investigating the claims, I find that one of two culprits is at work. I have already discussed one of the primary villains, the Nantucket Pine Tip Moth, in a TreeLines article a while back. Now let’s talk about the other one. DEER! Officially Whitetail Deer." Many hunters wonder about how often they should be checking and filling their deer feeders, especially on properties that are hours away and require remote feeder management. Although deer feeders don't magically make whitetail deer appear on your property, feeder management can help boost deer and other wildlife on your property. Check out this article for answers to some of the most common feeder-related questions such as: 🌽What time should I set my deer feeder to go off? 🌽How often should I check my deer feeder? 🌽What kind of goals and expectations should I set for my feeder? Moultrie's FEED HUB makes it easier to manage your feeder, no matter where you are. Take the guesswork out of feeders with this smart, connected solution that works for nearly all spin-cast game feeders.

Following the tragic torture and end of a yearling wolf's life in Wyoming, and our subsequent Wyoming Wolf Week to honor this lost life, we remain committed to spotlighting the questionable wildlife "management" decisions in this state and beyond. Wyoming continues to remain at the forefront of concerning wildlife-related choices. Hunters in this state, and many others, often claim that 'wolves decimate elk and deer populations'. However, science simply does not support this claim. Even more plainly, exploding elk populations do not support this claim. In an effort to cull some of the state’s abundant elk herds, the Wyoming Game and Fish Department has recently proposed unlimited cow/calf elk tags in some hunt areas this fall. And yet, the "what about the elk?" argument persists, despite wolves engaging in what's known as compensatory predation. This means that while they may contribute to ungulate mortality, they do not increase the overall death rate in populations. Instead, they may simply alter the primary cause of mortality, often replacing other factors such as disease or environmental stress. Wyoming allows some of the heaviest wolf persecution in the Northern Rockies, effectively working to eliminate the most natural and obvious solution to their ungulate imbalance — wolves. It’s so frustrating to see more and more state and even federal agencies now also ignoring science. I’m used to politicians doing this, even used to some Media agencies “both siding” coverage on these topics and promoting non-sense and ignoring or limiting discussion of the actual science… to get to “fair and balance” (and protect their numbers and thus bottom lines and profits) but it’s infuriating that actual government agencies are also now ignoring it.

Eyes in the Trees, Ears on the Ground 🌳 🌳 A survival strategy that benefits both 🐒 🦌 The relationship between langurs and deer in the forest is an good example of mutualism, a relationship that benefits both the species. With their excellent eyesight and vantage point in the trees, langurs can spot predators like tigers much sooner than deer. When they see danger, they raise an alarm call, warning the deer. Deer have a strong sense of smell and hearing, which helps them detect predators approaching on the ground level. #deer #langur #mutualism #wildlife Both deer and langurs have a better chance of escaping predators.

Why is it that hunters and trappers tend to shy away from using their emotional connections and spiritual motiviations to defend their activities. They are quick to turn to using protective buzz words like "science-based wildlife management," "conservation," and "tradition" to counter the advancing anti-hunting/anti-trapping movement. Our opponents are controlling the conversations and influencing legislation fueled on wild emotion and irrational feelings, paying no mind to reason, logic, and sound science. You'll never convince them otherwise nor even be able to wedge a seed of consideration into their viewpoints. But why is it that hunters and trappers almost apologeticlly use a common and worn out rhetoric to justify their most personal, intimate, and visceral beliefs and lifestyle? Over the weekend I watched the premiere of the Vermont Trappers Association film, "Trappers, Stewards of the Wild," and while it was full of facts, truth, and evidence to support trapping, it was refreshing and enlighening to see several trappers expressing deep and sincere emotion (shedding tears) for their chosen lifestyle. Don't apologize for being a hunter or a trapper, and don't be afraid to be vulnerable and show your emotion. Can we normalize hunters and trappers sharing their feelings, too?? #hunting #trapping #conservation #wildlifeconservation #wildlifemanagement

How much can one photo tell a story? This great blue heron pic says quite a bit. First, the bird is sitting above a #wetland where water levels had returned after a period of years when levels were low, and little #wildlife was around. Large cottonwood #trees died when their roots were submerged and #woodpeckers drilled holes in the trunks, which you can see in this photo. Dozens of dead trees rife with such holes now provide nesting cavities for #woodducks #swallows and other species, including #starlings. Flocks of #birds attract apex #predator species such as #coopershawk and #kestrel, #redtailedhawk and #greathornedowl. This #heron fishes for #frogs in the #swamp and #marsh, and even hunts #mice and #voles on nearby uplands. #Muskrat and #mink, #weasels and #snakes all live here too. Regal on its perch in the morning sunlight, the heron symbolizes a healthy #environment and vital #habitat for dozens of living things including #turtles, #salamander and #dragonflies, #bats and #gulls, #terns and #ducks, #geese of four kinds and #swans, #eagle, #osprey and #kingfisher too. All because the #wetland wasn't drained and #insects thrive and drive the #foodchain. Photo ©ChristopherCudworth 2024

Timber Management from Seedling to Sale
3moTip moth has been around some 80 million years, trees eventually outgrow attacks. When deer are eating pine seedlings it’s usually an indicator of overpopulation….. thin the herd!!
