Something happened to Dearborn County. We used to be the community which let our historic downtowns deteriorate. We ignored -- if not abhorred -- the Ohio River. We didn't see much value in artistic and cultural offerings. We had an aversion to working together. Whether it is the IEDC READI program or the recently relaunched OCRA Stellar Pathways program, we are often told that our communities need to go bigger, bolder, and more transformational with our investments and future planning. If you sit back and take inventory, you will realize Dearborn County is already well down this path. Have you seen East Central High School's new natatorium? The snow-making innovation at Perfect North Slopes? What about the concepts for the City of Lawrenceburg Riverwalk project? Or do we realize the milestone that is the new, state-of-the-art cancer center which St. Elizabeth Healthcare just opened in Greendale? We even have one of the most popular night clubs in the Cincinnati area at Hollywood Casino's Boogie Nights. All this right here in lil' ol' Dearborn County. What got into us? What changed our "Humble Hoosier" mentality? Some might say it is just the result of riverboat gaming or Cincinnati's urban sprawl and population growth spilling over state lines into Dearborn County. If you ask me, it came down to visionary leadership and innovators. People which we at One Dearborn have the fortune to engage with each day. We shouldn't scoff at big ideas which appear beyond our grasp. As our track record shows, with the proper buy-in and prioritization, such ideas are more achievable in Dearborn County and Southeast Indiana than we give ourselves credit for. For Dearborn County to succeed in becoming an Indiana Office of Community and Rural Affairs #StellarPathways designee, we'll need people of many backgrounds, ideas, and desires for our communities to be thoughtfully engaged. It's a big table. I hope you'll pull up a chair.

Being Brooklyn bred-has taught me a few things: One—the block aunties know all the secrets. Two—we show up for our people. Three—double dutch isn’t for everyone. Mutual aid is one of the cornerstones of resource activation and if we were to approach community-generative resourcing processes through this lens—we’d get a lot farther faster. It’s not just about community-led or community committees; it’s about culturally relevant and aligned resourcing strategies that start at the top in grantmaking leadership. We need to set and implement the strategies. Black and Brown Brooklyn folks, like so many communities facing rapid and generational gentrification—and erasure—know that asserting ourselves and occupying space is needed. We know we’re stronger together. We know that we need to support one another. And we know what to do with that money when we get it. Let me clap so you get my point: 👏🏾 trust 👏🏾 us 👏🏾 with 👏🏾 resources 👏🏾 period. I guarantee you we can figure out what our communities need—because we are the community. There’s a rhythm to this resource work. Like telephone wires hitting pavement, we know how to tap in. We know what questions to ask, and when we don’t know an answer—we know which auntie has it. "Oftentimes, we do incremental things that actually disrupt our ability to be able to get to justice. And we say, well, since justice is so far out, or justice isn’t possible, then it doesn’t matter, we just need to take this win in the near term. And that can’t happen anymore. We have to be able to orient our day-to-day work, even if it’s small, on a path to justice, and make those hard choices in this near term that sometimes we have to make in order to adhere to that principle of justice and not take the easy win. Our answer: in many ways! For example, we include past Fellows and other community leaders in selecting Bush Fellows. We also ensure community perspectives inform our grantmaking, from advisors to develop program strategies to community references about individual grants. And we regularly survey people who directly experience our programs — including both applicants and people who help with selection — and make changes based on their feedback.

Alden Loury is spot on with this article in this Sunday's Chicago Sun-Times. Black Chicago is in need of a complete development package from City Hall and the Illinois General Assembly. Now let's give credit for Mayor Johnson's infrastructure goals in continuing the push for the $3.6 billion Chicago Transit Authority Red Line Extension on Chicago's far south side and the $339 million in lead pipe replacement that is litterly harming our Black children with permanent brain damage and other health issues. The same will need to happen for housing, business and workforce development, environmental justice, and public health and safety. Again, we must give credit for opening an Environmental Office, creating a Chief Homeless Officer, and raising $66 million for public safety as part of a $400 million initiative to reduce gun violence by 50% over next five years with Chicago CRED and other violence prevention organizations. Now is a question of proportionality when it comes to the other needed investments, such as housing and public health. 27 of the 77 (now 78) neighborhoods are predominantly Black populated in Chicago. The concern is - in the past - Black neighborhoods are normally grouped together and made to compete with each other, and other neighborhoods, for limited funds. By doing this, you "spread the peanut butter" so thin that you cannot measure the desired impact. Since there is not a desired impact of reducing housing, food, or health insecurities, what tends to be the focus and marketed is the dollar amount and not the impact. Additionally, predominantly affluent white neighborhoods tend not to compete for funding and receive substantially more per neighborhood. For instance, if you combined the proposed projects of Lincoln Yards, The 78, and LaSalle Street, these projects total more than 13,000 housing units and $16+ billion in private and public investments. I did not even mention the West Loop and River North. I have to stress again that these projects should happen as I never want block investment into Chicago. This is a question of proportionality. For the 27 Black populated neighborhoods, how many housing units and public/private investments will be awarded and what percentage is that compared to the need. The 78 project, if the White Sox deal happens, is estimated to cost $9 billion alone. Black Chicago needs proportional investments as seen proposed in other communities. https://lnkd.in/gDP9vXrg
