🥇 As the Paris 2024 Olympics begin tonight, a celebration of international unity and sport, it's an excellent time to reflect on another topic requiring a global collaborative effort - sustainability! Did you know that the average annual CO2e emissions of a UK resident are 4.72t? Struggling to picture this? On Saturday morning, turn on your TV, watch the swimming, and take a look at the pool . On average every year, a UK resident emits enough CO2e to almost fill an Olympic swimming pool (96% at STP). 🏊♂️ Luckily for sport there's 3 spots on a podium. Unfortunately, however, with sustainability only a gold medal performance will do. Whilst cardboard beds, temporary venues, and public transport networks will make a difference for these games, it's still essential that every individual plays a part in the sustainability challenge we face. #Sustainability #Paris2024 #ClimateAction #OlympicGames

🌍 The Olympic Games - it's not all gold, silver and bronze that glitters 🌍 🗼 Beds made of cardboard, furniture made of badminton shuttlecocks and parachute material and medals made of recycled materials, 18 grams of recycled metal from the Eiffel Tower and 100% recycled gold and silver. Has it been mere show off of France than to actually set a good example? The athletes are not now remembering the idea that we must commit ourselves to the environment, but that they have received medals that were already decaying during the Olympic Games 2024. This is at odds with the concept of 'sustainablility' that is so important in climate measures. Did you know the seats at the Paris 2024 Olympics are made from recycled plastic bottles and caps? The 2024 Olympics focus on sustainability includes recycling, featuring furniture crafted from shuttlecocks, bottle tops, and parachute canvas, French business, Le Pavé, has turned 100 metric tonnes of waste, sourced from local bins and bottle top collections from schools, into 11,000 eco-friendly seats. You can spot the seats at the Arena at Porte de la Chapelle, which will host badminton and rhythmic gymnastics and the Aquatic Centre featuring diving, artistic swimming, and water polo competitions. Sports are becoming more sustainable

🤔 Did you know that the Paris Olympics has vowed to be the most sustainable Olympic Games in history? 🇫🇷This is fitting considering Paris is the city where the Paris Agreement was signed - which aims to limit temperature rises of more than 1.5 degrees Celsius. 👇Some examples of how the organisers are trying to be more sustainable: 🛌Tables made out of shuttlecocks, cardboard beds, plant based menus.  🏟️ Only two new stadiums are being purpose built - an acquatics centre and a badminton/gymnastics arena.  🧱The new stadiums are being built with low carbon construction methods.  🚴 There’s a 60km cycling network linking all the venue. ✍️ Let us know what you think of these efforts in the comments or DM us. #Sustainability #ParisOlympics #ParisAgreement

Heavy rain during #Paris2024 could pose challenges for Olympic and Paralympic events in the River Seine. 🏊 > Two Paris test events were called off earlier in August 2023 because of water quality issues, and Olympic races may need to be rescheduled if the Seine does not meet required standards next summer. > Rainwater will be collected in a new storage basin and only allowed into the river after meeting strict health criteria, organisers told the BBC. > To ensure the safety of athletes swimming in the Seine, daily water testing will be carried out during the Games. > But cleaning up the river for the games has already returned pollution to “pre-industrial era” levels - and also accelerated plans to open three new quayside swimming areas for public use from 2025. The water conditions of the Seine River have been a hot topic ever since it was revealed as the venue for the swimming portion of the men’s and women’s triathlon and the marathon swimming event. This decision caused quite a stir, as swimming in the Seine has been banned for the past century due to pollution and high bacterial levels. In preparation for #Paris2024, the city of Paris invested $1.5 billion in an effort to clean the river. 🏊♂️ Two weeks ago, Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo even took a dip in the Seine to ease concerns around the water conditions. However, worries resurfaced when it started raining during the opening ceremony, with showers lasting into Saturday, giving the river less than 72 hours to recover in time for the men’s triathlon scheduled for Monday. After further testing and schedule delays, the water was finally deemed safe for competition on Wednesday morning, Paris time. Cleaning up a river like the Seine is not an easy job, but the city of Paris, the Paris 2024 - Comité d'organisation des Jeux Olympiques et Paralympiques de 2024 and the International Olympic Committee – IOC were committed to making the impossible possible.
