On this day in history 03/08/24. In 1531 King Henry VIII was recognized as the supreme head of the Church in England by the Convocation of Canterbury. The title of Supreme Head of the Church of England was created in 1531 for King Henry VIII when he first began to separate the Church of England from the authority of the Holy See and allegiance to the papacy, then represented by Pope Clement VII. The Act of Supremacy of 1534 confirmed the King’s status as having supremacy over the church and required the nobility to swear an oath recognising Henry’s supremacy. By 1536, Henry had broken with Rome, seized assets of the Catholic Church in England and Wales and declared the Church of England as the established church with himself as its head. Pope Paul III excommunicated Henry in 1538 over his divorce from Catherine of Aragon. Now you know. On Leadership: Pope Francis’ decision this week to allow Catholic priests to bless same-sex couples comes just one day after the Church of England under Archbishop Justin Welby offered its first blessing of same-sex couples. This is a historic move for these faith institutions in making God’s grace available to everyone. This is also a story of fortitude and conviction as both leaders compel their churches to engage the world as it is. 🔹 Pope Francis and Archbishop Justin are experiencing fallout from some within the Catholic Church and Global Anglican Communion, respectively. 🔹 Pope Francis’ message in his October 29, 2023 Synod mass preceding the Vatican’s announcement was that God’s love cannot be confined “to our own agenda.” God’s love is for everyone. No exceptions. Watching these two leaders at work over the past several years, and how they have shown up for each other, may this also be a story of human fraternity. As you close out 2023 and contemplate how you will take on 2024, I wish for you the gift of human fraternity. 🔸 It is through showing up for others that we find understanding and strength to do the hard and meaningful things. Here is Archbishop Justin on knowing Pope Francis:
