The Teachers Transforming Nursing Education Facebook Group has been having a lively conversation about declining clinical judgment and practice readiness in nursing students. One reason given for the decline is the decreasing amount of clinical time offered to students. One educator said that CNOs can’t expect practice ready nurses if they don’t give students clinical time to practice! It’s a hot button issue and it is complex. What can we do now as educators? We must make the most of our class time by implementing educational best practices by bringing clinical into the class. → Contextualize all that you do, including assessments and skills, to the patient. → Emphasize clinical reasoning (ability to think in action and reason as a situation changes) by using KeithRN Clinical Reasoning Case Studies that simulate practice like no other. → Encourage and require collaboration to build team working and communication skills. → Role model the professional behavior and practice informed thinking you want to see in your students. Our class time is more important than ever with the decline of clinical time. We have the same responsibility to incorporate educational best practices in our classrooms just as we incorporate evidence-based practice in the practice setting. UBC Nursing Rounds When: Tue 1/30/2024 12:00p - 1:00p Where: Zoom Topic: "They bring the topic [of social justice] but stop there": Nursing students’ perceptions of teaching practices that develop awareness and engagement with social justice Presenters: Ismália De Sousa, Dr. Lydia Wytenbroek, Dr. Elisabeth Bailey, Dr. Suzanne Campbell Abstract: Pedagogical frameworks grounded in social justice, such as decolonizing and anti-racist educational practices, are essential in nursing programs. Yet, there remains a lack of knowledge about student perspectives regarding nurse educators’ approaches to incorporating social justice in education. We will present the findings from our scholarship of teaching and learning project focused on understanding nursing students' perceptions about educational strategies that develop critical awareness and engagement with social justice and positively influence professional practice. In the spirit of creating a teaching community open to unlearning and learning, we will collectively reflect on the uptake of these strategies in different educational courses and contexts and how to enact social justice in nursing education. Register for Zoom link: https://lnkd.in/exv-ckcg Please consider registering to join us - there will be opportunities for some lively dialogue and faculty and learners voices are paramount to directing future nursing education.

In Denver Health’s learning health system, nurses enhance professional practice and improve patient outcomes through evidence-based practices and quality improvement. We are excited to share new nursing research that offers an alternative to traditional block rotation and can accelerate nursing students' readiness for practice. Jama Goers PhD, RN; Kenneth Oja, PhD, RN; Kale Humphrey, MS; and David Mulkey, DNP, RN, CPHQ, CCRN, CHSE have published a study on a novel longitudinal clinical program for nursing students that measured new nurses’ readiness to start their job. The study may be the first examining the impact of a longitudinal clinical program for undergraduate nursing students in the United States. Goers says it well: "These types of programs have been well studied in medical education but not in nursing education. We are glad to be among the first to study such alternatives for nurses at Denver Health and elsewhere.” 🙌 https://lnkd.in/gmmtuQn8 CU College of Nursing #researchexcellence #nursing #learninghealthsystem Denver Health Office of Education

In the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, significant manpower changes (e.g., workforce migration) and advancements (e.g., transition to NGEMR) have reshaped the landscape of healthcare. Consequently, nursing students may encounter a distinct set of challenges as they begin their clinical education. As we endeavor to support and educate the upcoming generation of nurses, it becomes crucial to grasp the essence of the 'new normal' within clinical settings. In this study, our team Ying Lau Lau Lydia Han Shi Jocelyn Chew 邱涵詩, RN, PhD and Khairul used a distributed cognition qualitative perspective to examine final year nursing students' towards the new normal in clinical practice. While no singular new challenges emerged, our findings underscore the need to prioritize the enhancement of students' well-being during their transition from classrooms to hospitals. We would like to welcome like-minded individuals who are interested in curating psychological and physical wellbeing programs to connect and share their experiences :) Here is a link to the article: https://lnkd.in/gQYMZxqW

Academic Training and Objectives I am in the process of obtaining my nursing education at Texas A&M Nursing School. This program has prepared me to be a nurse by providing a rigorous curriculum that encompasses evidence-based materials, challenging coursework, interprofessional collaborations, and simulated and real-life clinical experiences. Some objectives I've learned though nursing school include - Integrating concepts, models and theories of nursing, the humanities and the natural, psychological and sociological sciences as the foundation for professional nursing practice. - Apply concepts and theories as a base for problem solving, decision making and critical reasoning in evidenced based nursing practice. - Utilize the nursing process in the holistic care of diverse individuals, families, groups, communities and populations in various health care settings. Lifelong learning explains the concept of always furthering ones education, never being satisfied, and always seeing the potential for growth. I have experienced lifelong learning in areas I have already been educated in, such as attending educational/training sessions for jobs I had been recognized at for demonstrating a deep understanding of my role and responsibilities. It is important to me to value this concept and strive to always expand my intellectual ability in order to provide the best patient care.
