[HKIA Journal | Issue 79: Community] By Us For Us: Hong Kong Co-operatives, Future Proof Narratives Guillaume Othenin-Girard / Kent Mundle By Us For Us is a project to position a role for the architect as a catalyst in the development of a ’third model’ of housing for Hong Kong, which aims to provide an alternative to the public-private dichotomy of housing and its financialization. By Us For Us tests its approach within a particular cluster of CBS Estates that are currently under threat of redevelopment: the blocks between Farm Rd and Anhui St in To Kwa Wan. This district is a sort of island with an alternative history of development, and therefore vision for living, from the rest of the city. While the building societies were left to develop their housing on their own, they were also responsible for the treatment of the street, alleys, back-yards, playgrounds, gardens, collective washing wells, and more. Rather than erasing the urban tissue and just building ’more’, the aim of By Us For Us is to investigate and demonstrate how we can make an argument for another conception of housing and remaking the city in Hong Kong. Living with the Dead: Adaptive Reuse of Ancestor Halls in Urban Villages of Southern China | Masters Design Project ‘Living with the Dead’ is a masters design project by Rui Niu from the ‘Architectural Association School of Architecture (AA)’ that explores the adaptive reuse of ancestor halls in Southern Chinese urban villages, which were once essential for patriarchal rites and communist reeducation. This project revitalizes the village by blending tradition with modern needs, transforming ancestral spaces into vibrant, multifunctional hubs. It aims to preserve cultural heritage while fostering community, adaptability, and sustainable living for future generations. CONGRATULATIONS to Cédrix Tsambang, Christolle Tsambang and the Chorus Architecture (CA) Cameroonian team for winning 1ST Place 🥇at PRIX RAMSES 2024! 🥳🎉 Their design mitigates urban pollution and increases urban green space https://lnkd.in/dzjsTfJd Tell us what you like about the design. We can start to think about how to create ideal urban spaces What we tend to hear on why people like "estate (aka suburban)" living * Less noise (traffic, neighbours above and below/to the side) * Close to nature * Less expensive for more living space * More independence on how to maintain one's property (as long as you maintain esthetics nobody can impose "development fees" for things you don't want) What they love about high density urban living * High speed telecommunications * Views from upper floors * Plenty of service and shopping options * Walking distance to restaurants and entertainment * Multiple schools, hospitals, universities * More employment opportunities * Multiple transportation options What are your recommendations on how to make high density urban living more like a quiet leafy estate?

Ying Sze Pek reviews the book, Everyday Modernism: Architecture & Society in Singapore. This book provides insight into the transformation of Singapore's architecture throughout the late 1900s. The book's authors, Jiat-Wee Cheng and Justin Zhuang, coined the term “Singapore vernacular” to explain the buildings that easily represent the time in which they were constructed. Pek's review expresses "Everyday Modernism serves as a repository of information and documentation that will raise awareness about Singapore’s architectural modernism, supporting the government’s belated conservation measures and potentially reversing the trend of leveling even beloved national symbols". If you want to know how people from a country are, look at their architecture. “Ludwig Mies van der Rohe” This is probably my favorite sentence of all time. It is very simple, but yes, we do what we are. If we look at Helsinki’s architecture, we can see a few things that a good observer will notice: - Straight lines (definitely not a curvy city) - Robust buildings (Materials like granite are predominant) - Organization - Soft colors and transitions Now we can ask ourselves: - In case of Finland, how does the Finnish language feel? Straight, robust, organized, and slightly shy. See the point? The farther you go from Helsinki, the bigger the difference. As the houses are more isolated, people are also less communicative. Now, after this, think about Portugal, for instance. How are they? #ramoncrespi #helsinki #psychology

‘Do you fight against the water or do you live with the water?’ Dutch architect Koen Olthuis asked in 2023. With rising sea levels an issue the world over, architects like Olthuis and Bjarke Ingels are creating innovative potential solutions in places such as the Maldives and Busan. These projects form an intriguing contemporary reimagining of the type of water dwelling we in Hong Kong and Southeast Asia have practiced for millennia. But can they create a modern city? And do we have a choice?
