Check out the latest Architecture 2030 article in Architizer, in which Architecture 2030 Senior Fellow Lisa Richmond interviews Build Change's Ariana Karamallis about the international nonprofit, which focuses on resilient housing for all. They talked about dedicating efforts to housing and resilience in communities and countries that are experiencing increasing natural disasters, how to keep #decarbonization in the mix, and about the importance of traditional building methods. https://lnkd.in/gQDJ72vM

As the debate around demolish+rebuild vs. retrofit continues, we asked ourselves, would it be possible for one project to: ✅ Save an historic building from demolition ✅ Re-purpose redundant building stock ✅ Tackle the climate emergency ✅ Help solve the housing crisis ✅ Combat loneliness ✅ Reduce deprivation ✅ Drive regeneration and growth ✅ Save money for individuals and the taxpayer ✅ Look beautiful Sound too good to be true? Follow the link to find out how we did all of these things and more with our 'ground-breaking' project at Dalby Square in Margate https://lnkd.in/edYShJ2y

What are y'alls thoughts on parks that go over highways? I think that when we look around the world, that this will create much nicer and more walkable spaces. But, I do think these are done best when public transit is included so people can get to these parks. But what do y'all think? Are these downsides that I haven't considered? https://lnkd.in/gBSXptV9 #engineering #cityplanning #urbandesign

We’re thrilled to share that L+M Development Partners has been selected as Engineering News-Record New York’s 2024 Owner of the Year, a distinction last achieved in 2019. In a profile article following the announcement, the publication emphasized L+M’s sustainable approach to design and construction as a deciding factor in its selection. ENR’s article highlights a few L+M projects with key sustainable features: • Sendero Verde (in partnership with Jonathan Rose Companies and Acacia Network) - the largest multifamily passive house in the U.S. • Arverne East (in partnership with The Bluestone Organization and Triangle Equities) - the first net-zero community in New York City which also has a 35-acre nature preserve. • Bronx Point (in partnership with Type A Projects LLC) - the first affordable housing project to receive the national WEDG standard for waterfront resilience. Where do buildings go when they die? The properties in orange on this map of downtown Richmond are all either vacant/distressed or have announced plans for replacement/demolition. That’s a lot to lose! Not all of these buildings have historical/architectural value, but collectively they represent a potentially catastrophic loss to our once vibrant downtown—beautiful, usable structures replaced by costly new construction, or worse, NOT replaced—leaving a gravel pit or surface parking in its wake. We are currently advocating for a Demolition Review Ordinance as part of the Cultural Heritage Stewardship Plan— a “Stop, Look, and Listen” process, to make sure the community has a chance to weigh in before something irreplaceable is lost. A Demo Review might also mandate that nothing be demolished without a replacement project already designed, funded, and approved, preventing the loss of life, people, jobs, and prosperity in the heart of our City. Orange Coast College in Costa Mesa California has been leading the charge in the designing and building of affordable and sustainable housing with the utilization of prefabricated cold-formed steel. How are they leading? Heavy emphasis on prefab CFS in Architecture classes Classes for CFS design and manufacturing - they own and operate their own FRAMECAD roll forming system https://lnkd.in/gUPYRdDe #CFS #ModularHousing #ADU #ColdFormedSteel #DfMA #Prefab Joseph Sarafian, AIA Rose Anne Kings

And not just preservationists, it sounds like our city's leadership finally sees the value of rehabilitating our existing buildings as well. It's hard not to... there are plenty of buildings that are ripe for adaptive reuse that can help create more affordable housing, it preserves embodied carbon, reduces waste of existing building materials, reduces the need to mine and harvest new building materials, and keeps the character of our city intact. Win win win! https://lnkd.in/gUXYhR9f
