Why We Must Protect Our Freedoms on Independence Day. The 4th of July is a day to reflect, remember, celebrate and protect our freedoms. From a historical perspective, the Declaration of Independence set forth a unique ideal which has become the cornerstone value of America; enshrining our rights to Life Liberty and Pursuit of Happiness. We fought to achieve our Independence from forces without, and then from within to abolish slavery, women’s suffrage, and civil rights for all. But now we are challenged by politicians from within who seek to limit and stifle our rights to free speech by censorship and other acts. On this 248th birthday of our country, we must always reflect on the importance of our individual liberties, and fight to protect them for our future generations. #4thofjuly #independenceday #independenceday2024 #happy4thofjuly #happyfourthofjuly #freedom #freedomofspeech #freedomofpress #civilliberties #civilrights #freedomofreligion #freespeech #firstamendment #patriots #donaldtrump #maga #makeamericagreatagainagain #trumptrain #trumpsupporters #americanvalues #constitution #declarationofindependence #billofrights

234 years ago, on January 26, 1788, Arthur Phillip along with eleven British ships anchored on the east coast of Australia and raised the British flag. The docking of these 11 ships marks the beginning of the British invasion of Australia. This invasion would endure through decades of land theft, massacres of, and widespread oppression of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders; a culture that still lives to this date. Between the beginning of the invasion in 1788 to 1930, an estimated 304 frontline massacres have been recorded. These massacres carried out by colonizers are responsible for the decline of the Indigenous Peoples (IP) population in Australia. After the period of colonization, the Australian government and British colonizers have turned the 26th of January into a day of celebration, branding it as Australia Day and ignoring hundreds of years of violent colonization and historical injustice. Hundreds of years after the British raised their flag on Australian territory, the culture of oppression, racism, and discrimination is still prevalent in the country. The Australian government willfully ignores the voices of Indigenous Peoples, turning a deaf ear to the appeals for land, rights, and justice. The government cannot disprove the fact that there is systemic oppression and discrimination against IP when it locks up Aboriginal children and consciously ignores IP to survive on their own. There is no reason to celebrate January 26 but rather it must be remembered as the day that spawned a long history of massacres, plunder, and discrimination. Across the globe, IP from Latin America, North America, and Asia, are standing up against colonial and imperialist narratives that erase IP heroes and their resistance. Their assertion of their right to ancestral land and self-determination remains core to their fight for political visibility and historical recognition. The International Indigenous Peoples Movement for Self-Determination and Liberation (IPMSDL) stands in solidarity with the IP, the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders in their struggle against a culture of historical oppression. International solidarity with the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders! Justice for Indigenous Peoples! Continue the Struggle for Self-Determination! On this Independence Day, let us celebrate not just our nation’s freedom, but also the journey toward true freedom for every citizen. Though we have shed colonial rule, many still struggle under the weight of inequality and the shadows of the past. Yet, we stand on the brink of a new era—where freedom belongs to everyone, not just the privileged few. Let us unite to build a nation where every voice is heard and every life valued. The dream of true independence is within reach; together, we can make it a reality. “You alone we worship and you alone we ask for help.” Quran 1:5
