Do Buildings Need Both an Energy Management system (EMS) & a BMS? While a BMS focuses on managing and controlling the system in a centralized location, an Energy Management system is specifically going to allow for optimizing efficiency in a building. By combining both systems, facility managers and building operators can obtain a comprehensive view of their building's performance, identify areas of inefficiency, take corrective actions and hence reduce cost and optimize operations. For example, a BMS can help identify the most energy-consuming equipment, and EMS can provide insights into energy usage patterns and trends across the building systems. By combining these insights, facility managers can optimize energy usage.

Energy Management System (EMS) Benefits The terms BMS and EMS are often confused. However, there is a clear difference between the two: An EMS consolidates energy metrics into an interface for instant monitoring and analysis, while a BMS does not. This additional capability of an EMS over a typical BMS unlocks multiple benefits, such as: • Building Power Consumption Pattern Visualization: Real-time power consumption data for a building. This valuable and actionable information enables operators to adjust equipment operating schedules and setpoints, maximizing energy savings. • System Power Distribution Visualization by End Use: Breakdown of different systems' power consumption and demand. This insight helps building operators identify the primary drivers of energy consumption and focus optimization efforts where they are most needed (e.g., HVAC, lighting, water heating). • Power Pattern Anomaly Detection: Smart algorithms notify operators of performance changes in specific equipment or systems, helping prevent potential equipment failures, business interruptions, and costly energy bills. • Building Power Consumption Optimization: Control strategies designed to maximize energy efficiency and power savings. HVAC and lighting systems are often the most targeted for optimization. • Improved Bottom Line: Energy savings of 10% to 30% can be achieved through efficiency and optimization strategies, representing a significant capital boost for businesses looking to improve profitability and growth. Many facilities never develop a true EMS infrastructure. They typically reach a BMS level and stay there, missing out on the benefits an EMS can offer. There’s only one more step from BMS to EMS—want to know what it is? Pilot and Emerging Tech Programs Manager @ Con Edison | Clean Energy Innovator | Sustainability leader & AEE International Young Energy Professional of the Year Winner
Last year we launched the Con Edison Real-Time Energy Management (RTEM) program to incentivize and promote lasting savings from optimizing building operations. From my previous work as an energy manager, I have personally experienced how truly transformational various RTEM systems can be for reducing energy consumption. I've been asked if I have some example projects to share and I hope to soon! In the meantime, I am excited to share case studies developed by NYSERDA who launched New York's first RTEM program several years ago, paving the way for ours. First up, a case study of 555 Fifth Avenue's deployment of Prescriptive Data's Nantum OS RTEM system. To paraphrase the NYSERDA report: "Prescriptive Data integrated the Nantum software platform with the building's existing BMS to centralize the data from the chilled water system, condenser water system, heating hot water system, air distribution systems, and utility meters. They also installed and integrated occupancy sensors to inform Nantum’s machine-learning algorithms that produced efficiency recommendations based on tenant behavior, real-time building energy usage, and interior and exterior temperature data. As a result, the building was able to continually optimize when to ramp up and ramp down the HVAC system, helping reduce energy consumption while maintaining tenant comfort. Furthermore, the alarm and notification features of Nantum provided the building operator with a heightened situational awareness and allowed the operator to identify and address any issues quickly and efficiently. Combined, the benefits to building operations delivered by the Nantum platform have resulted in an estimated 252,580 kWh in annual energy savings and $42,938 in annual cost savings."
