🌍✨ Exciting News! ICEBERG and its researchers Élise Lépy, Adam Stepien, Katharina Heinrich, Joan N. Larsen and Jón Haukur Ingimundarson are thrilled to participate in the Arctic Congress 2024 in Bodø! ✨🌍 This year's themes resonate deeply with ICEBERG’s mission to safeguard the Arctic environment and its communities. Here's how our work aligns with this year’s themes: 🧑🤝🧑 People of the North: Climate change is reshaping lives in the Arctic. We're committed to creating resilient and inclusive communities by co-developing pollution monitoring and mitigation strategies with indigenous peoples and local stakeholders. Together, we aim to ensure the Arctic remains a vibrant and sustainable place for everyone. 🌿 Sustainable Economic Development: With the Arctic's rich natural resources key to the green transition, our research ensures their sustainable use. We're investigating pollutants and developing innovative solutions like automatic marine litter detection tools to protect both biodiversity and traditional communities from exploitation. 🌏 Climate and Environment: Rapid climate change is the greatest threat to Arctic biodiversity and human well-being. Our project tackles this by identifying and mitigating pollutant impacts, from microplastics to heavy metals, using advanced simulations, remote sensing, and citizen science. 🌊 Oceans: The Arctic marine environment faces immense pressure. We're addressing this by evaluating pollution's impact on the marine food web and human health, ensuring our oceans remain healthy and productive. Professors Chan Kim and Renée Mauborgne introduced the concepts of red and blue oceans in their international best-seller Blue Ocean Strategy. First published in 2005, it was updated and expanded with fresh content in 2015. It has sold over 4 MILLION copies and is being translated in a record-breaking 47 LANGUAGES. Red oceans are all the industries in existence today – the known market space, where industry boundaries are defined and companies try to outperform their rivals to grab a greater share of the existing market. Cutthroat competition turns the ocean bloody red. Hence, the term ‘red’ oceans. Blue oceans denote all the industries not in existence today – the unknown market space, unexplored and untainted by competition. Like the ‘blue’ ocean, it is vast, deep and powerful – in terms of opportunity and profitable growth.

Back to the International Conference in Paraguay in November 2023 organized by #ICMAH #ICTOP #INTERCOM and #MPR: Museum Leadership in Climate Action Second day, third session Eugenia Villarmarzo from #Uruguay, as keynote speaker, presented challenges of climate change for the conservation of landscapes and coastal archaeological sites. Landscapes are changing because of the global warming! There are 18 protected archaeological areas in Uruguay but many risks: erosion, shift of the coastline, sandstorm, increase in detectorists… She recalled part of the definition of heritage: preservation of the present for the future and a way to make minorities visible. Yes, it’s a challenge! And the transdisciplinarity is very important between geology, archaeological heritage and environmental education and between research, management and mediation. Nouran Khaled from #Egypt presented how preserving museum collections in the time of climate change through different examples. Given the increeasing occurrence of natural disasters and their impact on cultural heritage, monitoring, controlling and providing intervention solution (temperature, humidity, brightness…) are representing a reliable methodology to safeguarding cultural heritage from the effects of climate change and giving the historical museums a chance to protect the world’s treasures. Myriame Morel-Deledalle from #France shared reflexions about the impact of the climate change for future research and exhibitions. She started with a picture of greek vestige from 6th century BC under the snow in Marseille, a city in south of France: an incredible situation! After that, she focused her presentation on prehistorical caves situation like Altamira, Lascaux, Chauvet or Cosquer. For this last one, in a specific situation under the sea, a replica is now visitable and it seems to be a solution facing climate change. In fact she recalled that we need to be more respectful and modest and stop our investigations in heritage. There are so many already dicovered sites to protect before destructing new unknown ones. Marie Grasse from National sports Museum in #France explained how the International Olympic Committee (IOC) takes the bid of sobriety and eco-responsability for its 33rd Olympiad in Paris in 2024. For the first time, the Olympic Games will be aligned with the Paris Agreement: less than 55% greenhouse gas emissons, 100% renewable energy supply, 100% of sites accessible by public transport and bicycle… Cc ICOM France

Excellent news for everybody who is dedicated to #Arctic #research and who wants to strengthen the collaboration between Nordic researches and researchers from Canada and the USA. I am particularly proud because NordForsk will open a call embedding #indigenous perspectives as a cross-cutting issue in the projects. The Nordic Council of Ministers and The Nordic Council
The upcoming call on Sustainable Development of the Arctic is progressing. We are pleased to announce that the Social Science and Humanities Research Council of Canada will participate as one of the funding partners. Additionally, we are in the final stages of negotiations with the U.S. National Science Foundation to do the same. All Nordic countries, with the exception of Sweden, are already on board. With the inclusion of the Faroe Islands and Greenland, it is set to be a historically wide-ranging, transatlantic call for proposals. This week, we gathered the members of the call committee at Arctic Frontiers in Tromsø to discuss the path forward. One of the main topics was how to work with indigenous perspectives in Arctic research. Asta Mitkijá Balto and Steinar Pedersen, both experts in indigenous research, provided valuable insights. Maliina Jensen from the Research Council of Greenland shared how they work with indigenous perspectives in their calls. A date for the opening of the call has not yet been set. What does 'happiness programme' mean? Actually it is three discussions on how can we make our world a place where living is prosperous for everyone. Green technologies are important but not sufficient for solving the climate crisis. So there arises the question of how can we sustain our planet Earth? We must make a decision on how we should solve the great problems we are facing today. We are living in an enormously important era because on this decision a lot of fates are depending right now! I will be discussing these issues along with Dr. Dittrich Ernő, Dr. Bükki Tamás Aila and Zalatnai Brigitta. We will talk about the role of happiness in the state of our only planet Earth and also the things we can do for a better future - and present. The event will be held on January 21th, 2024 from 16 PM to 19 PM. To be able to participate, you will have to register. Feel free to gain more information by clicking on the event's link below! #degrowth #green #solution #sustainabledevelopment #economy #ecology #happinessprogramme #sustainablefuture #greentransition

The challenges of today go beyond deadlines decided by governments, territorial claims of oceans and lands, or borders drawn on a map. Addressing global issues is a shared responsibility that requires collaborative efforts and swift decision-making. By dismantling the barriers between science, business, and policy, we can deepen communication and enhance our understanding of the pan-Arctic ecosystem, making each of us feel empowered and integral to the solution. Modern challenges, such as the impacts of climate change, fostering sustainable development, and navigating political tensions, are deeply interconnected. While the green transition's financial, societal, and environmental costs will not be fairly distributed worldwide, the Arctic holds a significant role in our global solutions. We hope to see you next year at the Arctic Frontiers 2025 Conference in Tromsø, Norway on the 27th - 30th of January.
