Last week, Ed Miliband announced an increase in the budget for this year’s renewable energy auction to over £1.5 billion. This funding aims to accelerate the delivery of clean, low-carbon electricity generated by renewable energy technologies such as wind turbines and solar panels. The goal is to provide affordable clean power to families and businesses, reduce the reliance on fossil fuels, and boost the UK's energy independence. The announcement coincided with the first meeting of the Clean Energy Mission Board, part of the government's mission to deliver clean power by 2030 and move towards net zero. The funding will be available through the Contracts for Difference scheme, which provides subsidies for clean electricity projects and aims to keep costs low for consumers. This design ensures that the central government's budget will not be impacted as subsidies are paid back when wholesale electricity prices are higher than the agreed Contract for Difference price.

Section 86(1)(e) of the Act mandates State Electricity Regulatory Commissions (SERCs) to allocate a percentage of electricity consumption to be sourced from renewables. This initiative, known as Renewable Purchase Obligation (RPO), is enforced across all SERCs, guiding electricity distribution utilities (DISCOMs) towards sustainable energy practices. The Ministry of Power supplements this with guidelines on RPO trajectory. Additionally, Section 14(x) of the Energy Conservation Act, 2001, as amended in 2022, authorizes the Central Government to specify minimum consumption shares of non-fossil resources for designated consumers.
