The referendum on EU integration in Moldova next week has the potential to redefine the country’s future, paving the way towards EU membership. This week, the European Parliament strongly condemned Russia’s malicious activities and interference ahead of Moldovans going to the polls on 20 October. According to MEPs, Moldovan security services recently stated that Russia has spent approximately €100 million to undermine the upcoming electoral process in order to get Moldovans to vote against closer ties with the EU. 🇲🇩🇪🇺 The European Parliament reaffirmed its commitment to Moldova joining the EU and called for more EU sanctions against individuals undermining Moldova’s independence. Georgia’s path to EU membership is at a standstill as its democratic values continue to decline.   In a resolution adopted earlier this week, Parliament voiced serious concerns about Georgia’s democratic backsliding, warning that the country’s EU integration is effectively on hold.   Despite Georgia being granted EU candidate status in December 2023, MEPs condemn the ruling Dream party’s authoritarian agenda, including restrictions on media freedom and LGBTQ+ rights, as well as growing anti-EU rhetoric.   The resolution calls for an investigation into police brutality and personal sanctions against those undermining democracy, including former Prime Minister Bidzina Ivanishvili. MEPs stress that the upcoming parliamentary elections on 26 October will be crucial for Georgia’s democratic future and EU aspirations, and urge the Georgian authorities to ensure that the upcoming parliamentary elections respect the will and free choice of their people. The European Parliament discussed Hungary’s priorities for its Council presidency with Prime Minister Viktor Orbán. The Council presidency rotates among EU member states every six months, with Hungary’s presidency having started on 1 July and finishing at the end of 2024. Among the priorities for the presidency he outlined are: · Strengthening EU competitiveness · Reinforcing European defence policy · Accelerating Western Balkans enlargement · Managing migration and reforming Schengen · Reforming cohesion policy · Supporting a farmer-centred EU Agricultural Policy · Addressing demographic challenges “The EU needs to change,” Prime Minister Viktor Orbán said. Most MEPs criticised Orbán for turning Hungary into a hybrid regime, undermining Ukraine's fight against Russian aggression, and aligning with illiberal regimes like Moscow and Beijing. Concerns were raised about Hungary's disregard for EU values, with allegations of corruption and government restrictions on judicial independence, media freedom, and civil society. Several argued it was a mistake to grant Hungary the EU Council presidency and called for suspending its voting rights under Article 7. Other speakers disagreed, commending the Hungarian government for its stance on migration and for placing competitiveness at the top of its priorities. Members of Parliament assessed the escalating violence in the Middle East and the latest developments in Lebanon with EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell on Tuesday 8 October.   The previous day, MEPs also debated with representatives of the European Commission the anniversary of the Hamas terrorist attack that killed 1,200 Israelis on 7 October 2023 and triggered the current war in Gaza and wider Middle East destabilisation.   While around 100 Israeli hostages remain unaccounted for, the numbers of victims in Gaza rises every day, and the war is escalating as Israel has begun ground attacks on Hezbollah inside Lebanon. In retaliation for Israel’s attacks on Hezbollah and on Hamas in Gaza, Iran has fired ballistic missiles on Israel.   Watch what MEPs had to say in this recording of the debate: https://lnkd.in/eBDdTNXZ
