Technology Job Seekers / Job Market Participants currently within Banks/Big Companies and interested in moving towards Hedge Funds/Quant Funds/Investment Managers/Generally smaller, more agile firms. Some very basic advice for you: Banks/Big Firms: Base-heavy Stiff you on bonus Politics Meetings about having meetings Progression equals Management Title-driven hierarchy Put you into a box Buy-side is VERY different from sell-side/big corporates, especially in: How they pay people (bonus heavy) Promotional culture (not a title-driven hierarchy) Internal culture (less meetings more doing) Expectation that true techies can wear multiple hats/learn new skills/solve problems independently etc If you are interviewing for one of these companies, stop fixating on: 1) What is my job title going to be? 2) I need 90% of my comp to be paid in base 3) I need them to explain my progression routes religiously And start focusing on: 1) Opportunity to work alongside some of the smartest people in the world 2) Opportunity to fast-track your career and financial progression 3) Opportunity to actively develop new skills commercially 4) Opportunity to engage with much larger volumes of users 5) Opportunity to progress based on what you can do not how well you play politics You want to join this industry because you think its better. The general feedback across the market suggests that it is. So if you want to join it, respect it's cultures, stop trying to remap it into a bank and open your eyes to the opportunity in front of you. ~ Craig

RECRUITING UPDATE 5/14 The lateral hiring market is gaining momentum, particularly for mid-level Associates and Vice Presidents in technology and restructuring M&A. However, clients are hesitant to consider Associate 3 candidates who are expecting a promotion at the end of the year, and placing VP3/4s who anticipate a Director role within a year is proving to be difficult. Directors who have not been originating business are costly and vulnerable to layoffs, with reports of several banks making cuts among underperforming Analyst 1s and Directors in the past week. We anticipate further layoffs to occur in June as banks reassess their personnel needs. Job seekers should prioritize adaptability in their search. Instead of waiting for the ideal role, it's important to be open to various opportunities. If you have limited experience with closed deals, consider adjusting your expectations regarding company brand and job title.
