On the Great Barrier reef, the most extreme daytime low tides occur during the winter months of June, July and August around the full moon. Much of the reef flat and reef crest is exposed at these times, and some corals will spend several hours out of water, which can cause bleaching or mortality in the upper parts of the colony. This exposure stress limits how far coral colonies can grow into the intertidal zone. The extreme low tides do however present great opportunities for marine science, especially aerial surveys using photography and videography to quantify coral cover and growth forms over large areas of the reef very quickly. This video footage was taken in Geoffrey Bay on Yunbenun (Magnetic Island), an inshore fringing reef only 11km from the mainland, and it clearly demonstrates the high coral cover, biodiversity and spatial complexity of the coral community at this site. As we approach another potentially very hot summer where bleaching may occur, it is important to have this sort of detailed image information that has clear spatial and temporal accuracy so that we can make informed, scientific measurements of the true impacts of those events. Our Systems Evaluation Network started out with the intention of bringing people together with a shared experience (challenge!) of evaluating complex systems approaches. We've now seen it become a collaborative space, hopefully with shared trust between members, nudging some change in practice and thinking. The archetypes below certainly a helpful way to think about the different roles / opportunities for Communities of Practice.

When I met Dr. Angela Schedel and shortly after I researched her background in coastal resilience, I asked her a question - knowing her education and experience is in coastal - I wanted to know what her sign was hoping it was Pisces. (Coastal and water) Not only is she a Pisces, she and I share the same birthday. Since that first question, I’ve asked her more - a lot more questions and a lot more on the professional side. How did she get in to coastal resilience and why does she stay in it? (We’ll get to that soon). At this point right now, we are seated together listening to fellow colleagues discuss the history of sea level rise at an internal conference. If you know me and my brand, I often go to worst case scenarios and there’s no difference in how I analyze sea level rise. Yep, I’ve cried about it. But the major difference in my analysis is that I’m learning the experts in the industry discuss not only the history of sea level rise but what they and others at HDR are observing in how we can positively impact what this looks like in the future. How often do you get to learn from experts in the industry and how they are exploring how we support our clients, community and future… and get to call them colleagues?
