The aviation industry, responsible for approximately 2.5% of global CO2 emissions, aims to become carbon-neutral by 2050. To achieve this goal, alternative and sustainable aviation fuels (SAF) play a crucial role. ✈ While other technologies for decarbonizing flights such as electric and hydrogen remain further away, SAF exists today. The world’s first transatlantic commercial flight on 100% SAF took place last November. ⚠ However, SAF represents less than 0.1%, of all jet fuel used today. The first #SustainableAviationFuel (#SAF) batches are certified under #CORSIA The nine batches, totalling 1,542 tonnes, were certified by ISCC - International Sustainability and Carbon Certification and #RSB and produced in China, the Netherlands, and the United States, by Ecochem, Neste, and World Energy, respectively. They were produced from wastes and are characterized by 75% to 84% lower #CO2 emissions compared to conventional aviation fuels. “The successful certification of these sustainable aviation fuels ensures that they present real environmental benefits on a life cycle basis, and it also confirms the performance of the certification process itself,” expressed International Civil Aviation Organization Council President Salvatore Sciacchitano. “This milestone shows that CORSIA global framework for #sustainability assessment is robust and ready to support the achievement of ICAO’s goals on #ClimateChange.”

🎙 ‘Carbon removals are an essential part of decarbonizing aviation.’ In my recent op-ed for Aviation Week Network, I discuss the urgent need for integrating carbon removal technologies into the aviation sector’s decarbonization strategy. While Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) has dominated the conversation, carbon removals are going to be at least as significant in terms of the solution – with the potential to contribution 25-30% of aviation’s carbon reduction targets. Removals offer a scalable and cost-effective solution to complement SAF, which faces its own challenges like sustainable feedstock shortages and market fluctuations. The aviation industry has already laid the groundwork through its experience with SAF in navigating regulations, market integration, and financing. This positions us well to quickly adapt and integrate carbon removal solutions. With a combination of SAF and carbon removals, we stand the best chance of hitting ‘jet zero’. The push towards sustainable practices is gaining momentum as the industry embraces Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) to meet net-zero targets. 🌎 Last year marked a significant milestone with Virgin Atlantic's first transatlantic flight powered entirely by SAF, showcasing the potential to significantly reduce carbon emissions—up to 80% over its lifecycle! The journey towards greener skies is not without challenges. Financing large-scale SAF production remains complex, with short-term airline agreements complicating long-term investments. Additionally, the regulatory landscape varies globally, with Europe setting ambitious mandatory blending targets and the US offering tax incentives to stimulate production. Despite these hurdles, the drive continues. Companies like IðunnH2 are at the forefront, planning to operate a commercial-scale synthetic fuel facility by 2028 in Iceland, aiming to produce e-kerosene from green hydrogen and atmospheric CO₂. Regardless of size or location, many airports globally have started to develop decarbonization roadmaps that address short, medium and long-term sustainability goals, working toward different levels of certification under the Airports Council International ACA plan. One of the highlighted innovations driving this change is replacing traditional jet fuel with Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF). SAF, made from renewable organic feedstocks, reduces carbon emissions by up to 80% compared to traditional jet fuel. However, there isn’t enough current SAF production to meet demand. Yet.   NXTClean Fuels is at the forefront of this sustainability revolution. Once in operation, our facilities will make us among the largest producers of SAF in world.
