To win the @sheamoisture first prize means that I can now starting a community called "Black Girls of Australia" which will serve several purposes: 1. Representation: It will provide a platform for Black girls and women in Australia to have their voices heard and their experiences validated. Representation is crucial for fostering a sense of belonging and empowerment within marginalized communities. 2. Support and Empowerment: The platform and community will create a safe space for Black girls to support and uplift each other, sharing resources, advice, and encouragement. This can be particularly important in combating feelings of isolation, discrimination, addressing trauma, mental health and physical health. 3. Visibility and Awareness: By highlighting the experiences and achievements of Black girls and women in Australia, the community can raise awareness about issues they face, such as racism, stereotyping, and systemic inequalities. This can contribute to broader social change and advocacy efforts. 4. Networking and Community Building: It facilitates connections and networking among Black girls and women across Australia, fostering a sense of community and solidarity. This can lead to collaborations, mentorship opportunities, and friendships. 5. Celebration of Diversity: It celebrates the diversity within the Black community in Australia, recognizing that experiences and identities can vary widely based on factors such as ethnicity, nationality, religion, and socio-economic background. Overally, starting "Black Girls of Australia" is an empowering and important initiative that can have a positive impact on the lives of Black girls and women across the country and nation of Australia. As we observe Women's History Month in 2024, Community Shelter Board’s mission: until everyone has a place to call home, highlights our responsibility and commitment to this year’s theme, "Women who advocate for equity, diversity, and inclusion.” Our system of care for our community members that are destabilized in housing is oftentimes tethered to unyielding structures of disparity and lack of dignity. Yet, we find compassion and care in our partners, and the very special staff, that work endlessly on behalf of the mission that so compels us. African Americans are disproportionately represented in every stratification of our shelter system--in families, in singles, in youth, in expectant moms, in gender stratification. It is imperative that CSB affirms and maybe even reaffirms our commitment and our responsibility to create a system that centers equity and parity, and with unrelenting resolve. With this affirmation, we thank every woman in our system and within our partnerships, our unsung heroes, who advocate for equity, diversity, and inclusion. We celebrate you!    We ask that you join in support to focus and uplift these resilient women. A few ways in which you can commit: 1) Enhance access to culturally competent and trauma-informed support services tailored to the specific needs of Black women survivors, 2) Establish partnerships with community organizations that prioritize intersectional approaches to address the unique challenges faced by this demographic, and 3) Advocate for policy changes that address systemic inequalities and provide adequate resources for Black women experiencing homelessness due to domestic violence. Let us stand in solidarity with these women, many who are among you, recognizing their strength and resilience, as we work together to create a more inclusive and supportive environment for all individuals.

"Misogynoir” refers to a particular form of discrimination against Black women, girls, and gender-diverse people. This article calls for those with philanthropic clout to vie for better work, futures, and policies that actively includes Black women and gender-diverse people. Thanks to the generous support of our community, Boss Women Matter (BWM) Round Table Talks have become a vital resource for Black women founders in Chicagoland. These open dialogues are a lifeline for Black women founders and serve as a cornerstone for community building, policy advocacy, and capacity building. While substantial progress has been made, the journey to economic equality for Black women founders remains challenging. Despite persistent systemic funding disparities to underrepresentation, our expanding community of founders is steadfast in their commitment to overcoming these barriers and creating a more equitable economic landscape.   Never before has our work been more critical. Excellent piece by Brandee M. Butler in Alliance magazine: "When donors talk about trust-based philanthropy, it’s painfully clear who they do and do not trust." She makes the following recommendations on how allies can support Black women leaders: 👉🏾 Trust and resource them: Donors who care about human rights and social justice should direct more flexible funding, at scale, for Black women–led organisations, especially for their protection from threats. 👉🏾 Center their leadership: Powerful donors should use their visible platforms to highlight, credit, and uplift the leadership and activism of Black women 👉🏾 Examine your own funding practices: Black women are intersectional organisers, addressing multiple systems of oppression, and across movements and borders. “Bridge the racial wealth gap and uplift Black women. There’s still time on the clock.”- South Carolina women’s basketball coach, Dawn Staley I know firsthand the power that public policy has in changing outcomes across generations. This is precisely why I have spent so much of my career both in Washington and at Goldman Sachs, pushing for the kinds of policies that can lift up not just Black women but their families, their communities, and the economy. Since launching One Million Black Women in 2021, we have made progress — from deploying over $2 billion in investments to graduating three Black in Business cohorts and now releasing our first Money Matters: One Million Black Women Economic Mobility survey. I believe in this work so much that I even took off my Blue Devils hat to join forces with South Carolina’s legendary Hall of Famer women’s basketball coach, Dawn Staley, to encourage this conversation. Our survey highlights a sobering reality — that Black women in America face a disproportionate rate of financial and job insecurity. We know that this problem can’t be solved without centering Black women, which is why we will continue to listen to the lived experiences of Black women and amplify their voices as they advocate for policy changes. We need support from all sides, from policymakers, to the private sector, to the community at large. Reducing the earnings gap for Black women has the potential to generate 1.2-1.7 million U.S. jobs, creating a more just and prosperous society for us all. I hope you’ll join us in this critical work.
