What is U.S. Women in Nuclear?
U.S. Women in Nuclear (U.S. WIN) is an organization of individuals who work in nuclear energy and technology fields around the United States. Our vision is aimed at positioning the United States for the future of nuclear energy and technology through the advancement of women. U.S. WIN’s strategic objectives are to:

Commercial fusion electrical generation is a promising innovative sustainable and clean energy method.
By 2028, Helion is expected to start producing electricity from its first fusion commercial power plant, which will provide electricity to Microsoft. The plant will produce at least 50 MWe after an initial ramp-up period.

In a fireside chat earlier this month at SXSW 2024, three leading nuclear energy advocates Paris Ortiz-Wines from Stand Up for Nuclear, Tea Törmänen from WePlanet, and Heather Hoff from Mothers for Nuclear, spoke about all things nuclear and what it means to be trailblazing women in nuclear advocacy.
Moderated by Bryony Worthington, they delve into public perception, campaigns to save nuclear worldwide, and grassroots advocacy.
When discussing California's campaign to save Diablo Canyon, Wines said, “We need public support because what a climate injustice it would be if nobody stood up for our last single source of clean electricity.”
Touching on public perception, Törmänen said “We wanted to convince the left and the greens and the whole environmental movement in Finland. And we succeeded in this…It’s based on science. Nuclear is sustainable.”

This past Tuesday NIRO’s Olivia Thompson joined representatives from UK Ministry of Defence, Department for Energy Security and Net Zero, Destination Nuclear, Nuclear Skills Delivery Group (NSDG), and Nuclear Institute Young Generation Network at the annual Women in Nuclear UK Conference to discuss “Skills for the future and opportunities in nuclear”. The session covered the need to implement meaningful changes now, the necessity to grow a diverse workforce to meet the 24 GW by 2050 target, and what we all can do.
The take-home points:
- The nuclear industry must be brave to address the current skills challenges and needs to be forward thinking about future skills challenges which the net zero by 2050 target will bring.
- Its vitally important to recruit individuals from diverse backgrounds, to challenge traditional job titles/descriptions to make them inclusive and relevant to today’s job seekers.
- At a sectorial level, there’s lots of things currently ongoing to address skills challenges, but individuals in the sector also have a role to play. We should seek new ways to share opportunities for personal development and to start talking about our own career journeys.
- We need to overcome fear of failure. Some of the interventions we may try may not be as successful as others and that’s OK. If we can be innovative around embracing new technologies in the sector, we can be innovative about embracing a diversity of people into the sector.
We are excited to spotlight one of The Hamiltonian student authors, David Goh. David is a member of the Duke University AHS Chapter and author of “More than Fissile Friends: Securing Nuclear Partnerships through U.S. Leadership.” The article examines how the United States can leverage its standing as a nuclear technology leader to create a risk management framework for exporting nuclear energy equipment and expertise. #AlexanderHamiltonSociety#TheHamiltonian

Today, the US Government Accountability Office issued a short report on our review of the National Nuclear Security Administration’s (NNSA) plutonium pit aging research. Plutonium—a strategic material used in U.S. nuclear weapons—was first made 84 years ago. Most plutonium pits are at least 30 years old and NNSA does not currently have pit production capabilities, making it vitally important to understand how plutonium aging affects pit performance over time. We reviewed NNSA’s 2021 plan to study the effects aging has on plutonium and pits. NNSA says that the research will help NNSA more confidently predict pit lifetimes for each weapon in the stockpile. NNSA will conduct aging research across the nuclear security enterprise at a cost of approximately $1 billion.
