"Buffalo National River is preparing to launch a public planning process for an updated river management plan and is seeking public input during a 30-day public comment period from August 16 to September 15, 2024. The project, in part, is the result of feedback from the local community, landowners, and river users who have expressed a desire to plan for increasing and changing the use of this beloved recreation corridor." 💧 What Lies Beneath Colorado’s Reservoirs? Some of Colorado’s reservoirs are hiding more than just water – they conceal entire towns lost to history. Over the years, communities like Iola, Sapinero, and Cebolla were intentionally flooded to make way for major engineering projects, including the creation of Blue Mesa Reservoir – the state’s largest body of water. While Blue Mesa is now a popular destination for water sports and fishing, its creation came at a high cost. In the 1960s, these ranching towns were submerged, forever changing the local landscape. However, during a severe drought in 2018, the town of Iola briefly reemerged, exposing remnants of streets, structures, and memories long forgotten. This story is a reminder of Colorado’s delicate balance between serving a growing population and preserving its natural and historical treasures. Learn more about the history beneath Colorado’s reservoirs and the communities sacrificed for progress. 🌊 https://lnkd.in/eXy_C96G #ColoradoHistory #DamsAndLevees #BlueMesaReservoir #WaterManagement #USSD

This is a very different topic than I normally share, but having just come across this, I felt I should. I am a very active outdoor enthusiast and a significant portion of my own personal enjoyment in life is associated with outdoor activities, attempts at interacting with and immersing myself in beautiful natural habitats, and I have enjoyed greatly the ability of all of us to enjoy the US natural parks. I know very little about the issues discussed in this article, but I do find it fascinating and important. Generally speaking, I think states should be able to be the arbiter of their own will within their state - it's part of what makes the US great - if you don't like the practices of your state, or the attributes of it...there is a vast array of alternatives, while still maintaining the joys and freedoms of still living in the US. This article makes the claim that Utah is attempting to gain control over US Federal lands within the bounds of Utah state lines for the purpose of monetizing them with special interests. Of course the state sponsors to the action deny that. I do not know if those claims are accurate or not, but I would not be surprised if it's the underlying intent of the state sponsors, but I don't think there is enough information to prove it yet either. It is interesting, and I think people should really care about these things. It's important that we play an active role in exercising control over the environment in which we live and the things that happen around us. I do agree that if Utah prevails (I do not think they should or that it would be good) it could set off a cascade effect where all states would try to reclaim all Federal lands for their own use - and I don't think that would be a good thing. Curious as to others' views! https://lnkd.in/gjNHCwTD

Last week we participated in the Public Hearing on City-wide Rezoning, specifically focusing on what’s actually required to realize a townhouse development with 4 units and 4 suites — the most dense version of R-CG redevelopment. A “4 + 4” townhouse project requires very specific site conditions that are typically only found in our historic grid-based Inner-City communities: ▪ Adequate lot depth (at least 120ft) ▪ Adequate lot width (at least 50ft) ▪ Generally rectangular lot shape (typically no pie, triangular or irregular lots) ▪ Access to a rear lane (a must have for access, waste & recycling and parking) It also requires local area policy support, reasonable land prices, supporting market demand and sites without other development challenges like flood risk.
