Japan Purchases 400 Tomahawk Cruise Missiles from the United States In response to increased regional threats, Japan has signed a deal with the United States to acquire up to 400 Tomahawk cruise missiles. Prime Minister Fumio Kishida's government aims to double annual defense spending to approximately $68 billion by 2027, positioning Japan as the world's third-largest military spender. The decision to accelerate the deployment of Tomahawks and Japanese-made Type 12 surface-to-ship missiles reflects Japan's perception of its "severest" security environment since World War II, citing threats from China and North Korea. The purchase agreement was attended by Defense Minister Minoru Kihara and U.S. Ambassador to Japan Rahm Emanuel. #Japan #TomahawkMissiles #Defense #RegionalSecurity

Operation of Pantsir system wins admiration in the Middle East The efficiency of the Pantsir system affirmed in real conditions gives rise to higher interest in it globally, noted CEO of the Russian defense export agency Alexander Mikheev Middle East partners of Rosoboronexport are enthusiastic about capabilities of the Pantsir air defense missile and gun system in the special military operation’s zone, CEO of the Russian defense export agency Alexander Mikheev told TASS at the World Defense Show 2024. "We often hear from foreign partners, including from the Middle East countries, enthusiastic reviews of videos of the Russian Ministry of Defense with the footage of Pantsir combat operation in the special military operation’s zone. The partners were particularly impressed by the one hundred percent destruction of rocket projectiles launched in a single salvo from modern MLRS of Western manufacturers," Mikheev said. The efficiency of the Pantsir system affirmed in real conditions gives rise to higher interest in it globally, the chief executive noted. Rosoboronexport is promoting the Pantsir at present in all regions of its presence. "Naturally, Middle East countries that traditionally equip their armies with the cutting-edge armament are among top importers. Furthermore, we offer a unique cooperation format to friendly countries, comprising localization of Pantsir production in the territory of customers," Mikheev stressed. #business #finance #financialservices

Japan looks to limit third-country defense exports to next-gen fighter jet Feb 18, 2024 Tokyo plans to limit — at least for now — exports of finished defense equipment co-developed with others to the jet being built with Italy and Britain. The Self-Defense Forces operate dozens of weapon types and other military systems produced locally under license from U.S. or European defense companies. Previous guidelines only permitted the export of license-built components to the United States, while also allowing the transfer of locally developed nonlethal assets and technologies. Decisions over what equipment will be transferred to which country or region will be made on a case-by-case basis.

Japan greenlights its defense industry The nation opens doors to military equipment exports while trying to honor its pacifist ideals Mar 29, 2024 Japan is slowly and inexorably unshackling its defense industries. The Cabinet of Prime Minister Fumio Kishida recently agreed to ease defense equipment transfer rules to allow exports of next-generation fighter jets it is jointly developing with the United Kingdom and Italy. This follows other steps that allow Japanese companies to participate more fully in the global market for defense equipment. It is the right decision. Japan must loosen restrictions that have undercut the ability of its companies to compete in this sector. There are limits, however, to how far liberalization should go. Participation in international defense projects ensures that Japan stays on the cutting edge of technology innovation, as well as remains a reliable and credible ally and security partner. Japan’s defense industries should never be contributing to the unrest and instability that unfettered sales can unleash, however.

the delivery of the BrahMos supersonic cruise missiles to the Philippines marks a significant milestone in the India defense export. India & Philippines signed a deal worth USD 375 million in January 2022, and the first batch of these missiles was delivered today. This delivery is part of a larger defense deal that includes three batteries of the export variant of the BrahMos missile weapon systems, aimed at enhancing the Philippine military's capabilities. The BrahMos missile is a product of a joint venture between India's Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and Russia's NPO Mashinostroyeniya, and is considered one of the world's fastest supersonic cruise missiles. This successful delivery not only strengthens the strategic partnership between India and the Philippines but also highlights India's growing role as a significant defense exporter in the region.

Pleased to share my latest analysis with you. The Japanese government’s decision Friday to allow the sale of a fighter aircraft Tokyo is co-developing with Rome and London marks another significant shift in Japan’s exclusively defense-oriented policy — possibly even one toward more expansive changes as the country continues to shed some of the postwar constraints on its military and defense policies.
