Should employers actively support the professional development of their employees? Savvy workers recognize that their current skills have a limited shelf life, necessitating continuous learning to stay ahead. This is due to the rapid pace of technological advancement, economic fluctuations, and other external factors reducing the longevity of professional skills. Personal development is crucial not only for navigating the aftermath of the pandemic but also for facing the challenges that lie ahead for both organizations and their employees. The key lies in finding the right equilibrium between fostering a positive learning culture and addressing future business requirements. Reports suggest that companies achieving this balance tend to experience higher levels of staff retention, job satisfaction, and overall morale. Offering learning opportunities to employees is essential for keeping them engaged and happy. However, this learning process should be self-directed, tailored to individual interests and career aspirations, and not imposed from above. This approach prevents individuals from feeling like they've lost control over their professional development and career paths. Instead, learning should be a joint effort that considers both the needs of the business and the personal ambitions of the employee. Construction Industry Spends $1.6B to Train, Upskill Workers ABC released its 2024 Workforce Development Survey, which found its member contractors invested $1.6 billion to provide craft, leadership and health and safety education to more than 1.3 million course attendees. Did you know: In the US, there is only one registered human factors specialist for every 700 certified engineers? Why does this matter? Human factors have been cited as contributors to many significant incidents that have cost industry $billions. Organisations must understand and manage human factors in their work processes to ensure the business is safe and effective.
