Petrobras released the preliminary rankings for the #vessels registered in their #tender to charter up to five OSRVs, which closed last week. Out of the 26 contenders, three were disqualified for incomplete proposals that lacked fuel consumption cost values: Mandrião and Atobá from Wilson Sons and Titan from Asgaard Bourbon Navegação. This company is still competing with two other vessels, yet to be named. The vessels are ranked by the lowest total daily rate, including fuel costs. Leading the list is OceanPact Serviços Marítimos’s Ilha de Tinharé, followed by Brasbunker's Mar Limpo III, V, and IV, and Bram's Campos Contender. The tender is divided into two lots: Lot A includes 14 vessels, while Lot B comprises 9 vessels. This is a really interesting report to read for anyone concerned with bridge operations and safety of navigation. The conclusions and recommendations speak for themselves but incidents such as this should never happen. What is needed are more continuous assessments of bridge team performance. A fresh pair of eyes on procedures and passage plans is also a good idea. For those involved in regular services complacency creep is a big risk factor as is skill fade which is a normal phenomenon when performing routine tasks over a long period of time without refresher training. Follow procedures always. Don’t cut corners. Review your passage plans and if necessary increase safety margins. Maintain excellence in bridge operations at all times. Protect life. Protect Property. If you know me, then you know that I love trivia. Especially historical trivia. (The next time we see each other, ask me about my favorite baseball statistic!) So you can imagine that I love this story. I only hope it is true. When I first read about this, my initial thought was: "This isn't that incredible, since ships have crossed the equator and date line for centuries, so I'm sure SOMEONE must've done both simultaneously--even at midnight on New Year's Eve--at some point in history. Then again, to do it straddling two centuries? That'd be cool." Which of course led to my second thought: "Given my limited experience working on ships out on the open ocean, I can only imagine the level of precision (and luck!) it would've have taken to achieve this. I don't think we could even pull this off with 21st century technology. How did they do this in the 19th century?" Which of course led me to Snopes. The passenger steamer SS Warrimoo was quietly knifing its way through the waters of the mid-Pacific on its way from Vancouver to Australia. The navigator had just finished working out a star fix and brought Captain John DS. Phillips, the result. The Warrimoo’s position was LAT 0º 31’ N and LONG 179 30’ W. The date was 31 December 1899. “Know what this means?” First Mate Payton broke in, “We’re only a few miles from the intersection of the Equator and the International Date Line”. Captain Phillips was prankish enough to take full advantage of the opportunity for achieving the navigational freak of a lifetime. He called his navigators to the bridge to check & double check the ship’s position. He changed course slightly so as to bear directly on his mark. Then he adjusted the engine speed. The calm weather & clear night worked in his favor. At mid-night the SS Warrimoo lay on the Equator at exactly the point where it crossed the International Date Line. The consequences of this bizarre position were many: The bow of the ship was in the Southern Hemisphere & in the middle of summer. The stern was in the Northern Hemisphere & in the middle of winter. The date in the aft part of the ship was December 31, 1899. The date in the forward part of the ship was January 1, 1900. The ship was therefore concurrently in: two different days, two different months, two different years, two different seasons and in two different centuries. Euller, John (Sept.1953).

📣 UPDATE on the legal process regarding the attack on a group of Iberian orcas in August 2023. Last year, we collaborated with WeWhale.co and Sea Shepherd France to file charges against recreational boaters who were seen firing at a group of orcas in the Strait of Gibraltar. The Iberian orca population is critically endangered and has become the focus of negative attention since their interactions with boats were sensationalised in the media. Sadly, this has led some sailors to act aggressively towards the whales, as in the case reported last year. WeWhale has received a response from the local judge, asking them to testify regarding this incident at a hearing in Algeciras, Spain, at the end of the month. WeWhale said: “We are happy that we can speak in front of the judge in the name of the Iberian orca and count on the active contribution and support of Sea Shepherd France and the World Cetacean Alliance who initiated the process together with us.” The WCA stands with WeWhale in safeguarding these critically endangered orcas and holding the attackers to account for their dangerous actions.
