What is Additionality? #LearningSustainability In the carbon offset market, this test answers the question: Are the GHG reductions a direct result of the project being sold? If, all else being equal, the project reduces GHG levels, then the project passes this test.
There is no denying the fact that greenhouse gas emissions are a pressing issue that needs to be addressed. While the Paris agreement and other multilateral agreements are a step in the right direction, the contributions made need to be deeper and more far-reaching to make the desired impact. The carbon market is a system designed to reduce greenhouse gas emissions through market-based mechanisms.
