As we step into 2024, a common sentiment emerges: "I'd do anything to avoid dealing with a recruiter." Before the eye rolls begin and accusations of bias and defensiveness fly, let me be clear: I get it. I share your frustrations. The recruitment industry has long been crying out for a transformative overhaul and is currently, regrettably, causing more issues than it resolves. Too many agencies are staffed with under-qualified consultants, judged by misguided KPIs, and driven by misaligned incentives. At its core, we're witnessing an unprecedented level of unprofessionalism, negligence, and, frankly, greed. Yet, this isn't a call to write off the entire sector. This does not mean we allow the bad apples (all be it there's a lot of them) to spoil the bunch. Do your due diligence when selecting a recruitment partner; you'll clearly see the difference in quality. Integrate them into the essence of your company culture, share what matters most to you and your brand, and watch them become advocates for your vision. Collaborate to craft a recruitment strategy that's tailor-made for your needs, recognising that a one-size-fits-all approach is futile. And, crucially, approach this partnership with respect and gratitude. In doing so, you secure not just a service provider, but a partner for life.

Hey Abdul, Spot on with this reflection! You've managed to capture the frustrations many of us have felt when it comes to dealing with recruiters. It's refreshing to see someone in the industry acknowledging these challenges head-on. I couldn't agree more about the need for a transformative overhaul. It's about time we see recruiters not just as service providers, but as genuine partners in our professional journey. Your emphasis on due diligence in selecting the right recruitment partner resonates deeply. After all, finding the right fit isn't just about ticking boxes—it's about building a relationship based on trust and mutual understanding. Integrating recruiters into our company culture and values is such a game-changer. When they truly understand what drives us and what we stand for, they become invaluable advocates, not just for filling positions, but for championing our vision. Thanks for the reminder that amidst the frustrations, there's still hope for meaningful collaboration. Here's to forging partnerships that go beyond transactions and towards building something truly impactful. Looking forward to more insights from you!

I believe recruiters should have more 'skin in the game' to find the right fit candidates for their clients. Most recruiters get paid at appointment or after the employee completes their first month. I think there should be a bigger payout (more upside for the recruiter) after a candidate they've placed completes a successful probation. That would incentivise them to invest more energy into understanding the retention aspect of it and not just the recruitment. My humble suggestion: Investing in psychometric testing such as the Kolbe A Index or DISC can significantly improve the odds of a successful hire. That's something companies who are investing in recruitment need to prioritize and recruiters need to push.

💯 agree, Abdul-Rahman. We spoke about this several times, what a pity that this is what the industry is going through and how people see it. Let’s make recruiting an activity that brings those together who are the perfect match in the most professional and positive manner. Great post!
