Driving Transformational Change for Transfer, First-Gen, Adult Learners 🎓 | Revolutionizing #HigherEd Policy & Practice Globally 🚀✨
#Transfer is often thought of as transactional and about the credit transfer. Transfer is not about credits; it's about #students and student journeys. Transfer is not simply about the 'handoff' from one institution to another, oy, I hate that word 'handoff' --transfer is about the professional and educational trajectory we are all on. Everyone can be a transfer. The transfer journey is from high school/workforce to #college (certificate, award, degree, courses, lifelong learning) to career/workforce and beyond! One aspect of this journey that is overlooked is transfer student career development. This book is the first I've read that addresses just that. If you are in the transfer field or #career development or #advising, please, please, please read this collection. What an incredible endeavor from Heather Maietta, Ed.D., CDFI, Phil Gardner, and National Resource Center for the First-Year Experience and Students in Transition. Thank you for addressing this vital topic in transfer! Thank you to Ale De Alba, MA, UCLA Career Center, and Transfer Nation for all the transfer work and #adcovacy that you do. Not to mention all the incredible #TransferChampions in this publication. It is #inspirational, and I am lucky every day to get to work with amazing communities of support like y'all! #highereducation #highered #transferstudents #studentsuccess #beyondtransfer #careerdevelopment Hey, National Institute for the Study of Transfer Students, Aspen Institute College Excellence Program, John Gardner, Gardner Institute, Transfer Nation, New England Transfer Association (NETA), New England Board of Higher Education, Tulsa Higher Education Consortium, Ohio Transfer Council, Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society International, Tau Sigma National Honor Society, Sova, ECMC Foundation, Ascendium Education Group, AACRAO, Center for First-generation Student Success, First Gen & Juice, La'Tonya "LT" Rease Miles, and so many more!!!!
Top Career + Executive Coach + FCD Course Instructor. 📝I write about navigating career transitions. Follow me for weekly advice!
As a student who transferred multiple times as an undergraduate until finding my home at Michigan State University, researching and writing this publication was a labor of love. Many times in my journey through the transfer process, I asked myself, “Why is the system set up this way?” Why is transferring so complicated?” I had many questions during my journey, got few answers, and received even less support. That was many, many years ago. Some transfer processes have improved since I was an undergraduate, but many have not. For these reasons, I am thankful to announce the publication of a new resource on meeting the career development needs of students who transfer. I would like to thank the National Resource Center for the First-Year Experience and Students in Transition for their support of this publication, specifically Jennifer Keup for her early work in making this project a reality and the excellent editorial team of Stephanie McFerrin and Rico Reed. Special affection to John Gardner of the John N. Gardner Institute for Undergraduate Education for initiating connections in support of this vision. Admiration goes to the publication’s contributing authors for giving their time and expertise to this endeavor: Janet L. Marling of the National Institute for the Study of Transfer Students, Heather Adams and her excellent work at The Aspen Institute and with Transfer Nation, Priscilla N. Vallejo at University of California, Berkeley, Heather Butler at California State University-Dominguez Hills, Marc Hunsaker at Berry College, Kerin Hilker Balkissoon and Padmanabhan (Padhu) Seshaiyer at George Mason University, Miranda Atkinson and Rachel Allen at University of Oregon, Aimée Eubanks Davis and Colleagues at Braven, Alejandra De Alba at UCLA, Niki Perkins at Western Governors University, Everett Weber at Dartmouth College, and Tasia C. who recently founded Meryl's Safe Haven. My appreciation is extended to my amazing support team at Regis College EdD in Higher Education Leadership and especially Dr. Priscilla Ann Wallace-Boerger, EdD for her tremendous, caring, unparalleled leadership. Finally, and most importantly, thank you Phil Gardner, my writing partner, sponsor, and friend. On to our next adventure! #transfer #careerdevelopment

Meet your leadership potential and lead your team to reach theirs Building high-performing systems ⚙︎ Building people's experience ⚙︎ Change yourself ⚙︎ Change the world ⚙︎ ⌘FLOWdiagnostics ⚙︎ Data-based communication
I always LOL when I see a job posting saying 'You must have several years of experience holding the position previously'. OMG, it is serious, you select your new colleague who meets this crazy requirement! You can do a better job description, and adopt a wiser approach if you assess your needs professionally and understand them before. It is a big mistake to require the experience of holding a post. You should require quality professional education in the field of the job, expertise, a good personality, high and balanced EQ. Some experience is a cherry on the top. If you have the background knowledge, you'll pick up things quickly. But having a job before... and bouncing from position to position, even if you have zero achievement...yes, systems usually work this way. According to Peter Senge, believing that you are your job is a learning mistake. Look at poor Ken. He is his job. But he even doesn't know what it means. He has experience only having the position...but in this 'having' he excels :)

Caught a fantastic piece by Cameron Bagrie today (note: it's paywalled), focusing on a critical issue: the rising number of young folks not engaged in work, education, or training. In an era where many dream of becoming influencers, these stats are a wake-up call. It's more than just numbers; it's about potential untapped and opportunities missed. But beyond identifying the problem, how do we inspire the next generation to find meaning and fulfillment in their work? We need to connect their passions to real-world applications and show that every role has an impact. Whether it's through mentorship, showcasing diverse career paths, or rethinking education, let's empower our youth to transform their aspirations into meaningful careers.
