This video is about six minutes long. You might not think you'll watch the entire thing, but you probably will. Posting it here will lead to a large collective loss of productivity. I'm not sorry. (There are quite a few versions of this video floating around. This was the original. I saw one the other day that was 15 minutes long. I watched every second of it.) It seems like every book on culture or leadership or mentoring eventually gets around to Gregg Popovich. He's the coach of the San Antonio Spurs. He has been their coach for almost 30 years straight, which is the longest anyone has coached any professional team (playing anything) in the U.S. So many leadership books talk about Pop because he's incredibly good at creating culture and getting people to give their best. With the Spurs, he's build a really amazing team that plays basketball differently. The Spurs are wildly collaborative in a sport where it's very easy to over-emphasize one's self. (Honestly, though, other teams may have emulated the Spurs by now. Maybe they're not unique anymore, but rather just set a trend for decades? I'm not a basketball expert.) Pop loves his players and his coaches. He thanks them every year for allowing him to coach them. He spends as much time planning what they do away from the court as what they do on it. With few exceptions, his players are incredibly loyal to him and to the team. "The Culture Code" talks about Pop a lot. So do dozens of other business books. This video gives a nice look into why. This video makes me want to be part of a team. (In fact, I think I will...)

Firstly senior management! They need an awareness of the pace of their games, Number of spins, Hands, and Length of shuffle. How many in here have daily target analysis on game productivity? None? Floor feedback! Discuss analysis results monthly with floor managers and hold them accountable for poor productivity. Discuss together aspects that could be changed to improve productivity. New dealer training! The fluidity of the game should be a priority, Focusing on chip and calculation skills. Measure and graduate only trainees who progress in their results over the duration of the school. Experienced dealer re-training! Measure existing staff in chip and calculation skills. Assist poor performers to improve and positively recognise high performers which demonstrates to the team that this is the direction to be going. Surveillance! Measuring game productivity should be incorporated into daily CCTV tasks. The analysis also brings to light infractions and gives CCTV an awareness of productivity which can be commented upon in the regular daily reports. Ego! Accept change if factual data demonstrates improvement. It will also help in meetings with owners when questions are asked about poor win results. https://bit.ly/493p28b

Before you take any job or work with any potential colleague, it’s important to consider if you admire the people in the organization. When I think about the best experiences in my career, they have always been working with people who I thought were better than me. When I was a soccer player the one thing I always tried to do, especially when I was young, was to play with people who had a lot more experience than I did. It forced me to think faster, to exert maximum effort, and, particularly when I was smaller and slower and younger than them, it forced me to use my mind more effectively and to think clearer about the choices I made. I am convinced the same thing goes for who you work with, and when I reflect on those past moments of flow and think back to the times when I knew we were absolutely flying, I was surrounded by people I admired for their work ethic, raw talent, lack of ego, and who they were, fundamentally. I wanted to be more like them, and it encouraged an environment of accountability that forced everyone to up their game. While I know I will always be striving to be better, it was these environments that motivated me to be the best version of myself, to be reliable, and to show up for those around me emotionally, spiritually, and to carry as much workload as I thought I could handle, and then a little bit more. I can unequivocally say that it was in those environments where we also had the most success. So, when you’re about to choose who to work with or what to work on, reflect on this. Is this the team to do it? Do you want to be more like them? Would you feel guilty for not showing up completely? I often think back to the Tim Duncan San Antonio Spurs. Sure, the Spurs aren’t great now, but at one point they showed us what true greatness looks like. A team in perfect harmony. This is how you win!

Well, that game certainly didn't disappoint. And the market wasn't bad either. It still remains to be seen whether the powers that be (i.e., the casino owners) want Vegas to host another #SuperBowl, but it seems to have been a great day/weekend/week in Sin City.
