This case was fascinating to be involved in, with a complex combination of legal issues and engineering matters that had me reaching for my old civil engineering textbooks. That said, our article below provides a concise outline of the relevant legal issues - without needing to know the difference between swales, check dams, and overflow drains!

It is probably one of the more well-known laws out there, but often citizens become lax when it comes to parking in front of fire hydrants. Parking in front of a fire hydrant prohibits fire fighters from accessing critical resources needed to quickly fight a fire. Please be mindful when parking and ensure you do not block a fire hydrant. As ruled by the High Court last year, in 2022 78% of all sewage discharges by the water companies were due to a lack of investment (lack of capacity) and a lack of maintenance. Another 21% of discharges are "under investigation". None of them were due to "exceptional rainfall". On the basis that “exceptional rainfall” is the only legal trigger for such discharges, why aren’t all of the water companies facing prosecution and/or action for failing to comply with the terms of their operating licences? What is the explanation please Environment Agency and Ofwat? #sewagescandal #sickofsewage
