This study demonstrates how becoming a high-reliability institution in health care is a priority, given the high-risk environment in which an error can result in harm. Literature conceptually supports the need for highly reliable health care facilities but does not show a comprehensive approach to operationalizing the concept into the daily workforce to support patients. The Veterans Health Administration closes the gap by documenting a case study that not only demonstrates specific actions and functions that create a high-reliability organization (HRO) for safety and improvement but also created a learning organization by spreading the knowledge to other facilities. #highreliability U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs

This recent article in National Review details what we’ve been complaining about for years: Despite a $338 billion budget, a 30% increase since 2018, the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) still fails at addressing its biggest challenges, including homelessness, timely access to health care, and suicide prevention. The VA is spending more on fewer veterans, but without improved outcomes or any clear accounting of what’s being accomplished. VA health care is a glaring example. Only about half of former active-duty military members are enrolled in the VA health care system. Worse, many have been denied benefits for illnesses related to exposure to toxic substances or had retirement benefits cut because of non-combat related injuries—a loophole the Major Richard Star Act would rectify. “Real improvement at the Department of Veterans Affairs will require policy-makers courageous enough and rebellious enough not to legislate by feelings alone and not to spend more money by reflex,” Rebecca Burgess writes. “The federal government should undertake a serious re-evaluation of what are and are not beneficial outcomes for our veterans and the whole of the country of which they are part.” Read the full article here: https://shorturl.at/cJVve #VeteransHealth #VeteransBenefits

"Water, water, everywhere, Nor any drop to drink." Samuel Taylor Coleridge's words vividly capture a core issue in data management, highlighted by Michael O'Reilly in his Forbes article, "The Unseen Data Conundrum": 80% of our abundant data is untapped, much like unusable ocean water. In public health, this parallels the critical need for refined, actionable data to enhance health outcomes and cut costs. The NC Public Health Data Summit 2.0 aims to turn this "data ocean" into useful insights for North Carolina's health landscape. As a preventive medicine doctor and planning committee member, I'm eager to see how we can leverage data to benefit our communities, akin to ensuring everyone has access to clean water. The Summit offers a vital platform for experts and enthusiasts to drive data modernization and health equity. Your participation could be key to harnessing data's true potential, turning it into a resource as vital as water for our collective health. Join us in this transformative endeavor. #NCDPHA #DataForGood #PublicHealth #NCPublicHealthDataSummit #DataModernization #PreventiveMedicine #NPHW #WeAreNCPublicHealth

It’s public health week people! Don’t forget to thank all those who… …make sure you have access to benefits, provide you client-centered care, call you to remind you about appointments, coordinate your benefits at farmer’s markets, teach your kids about healthy nutrition and hand washing, vaccinate us against deadly diseases, make sure your tap water is potable (or is fighting to make that a reality), who serve as liaisons among and between communities… …who fight for funding for necessary, life-saving resources, become experts on anything to advocate for better more equitable policies… …who remind you to be more physically active, to quit smoking, who listen to your struggle WHILE you quit smoking…. …who don’t earn that much but make sure your grant programs are effective… …that build evidence-based programs AND the evidence base itself… I could go on. Public health is everything. This week, recognize it. Give hugs and thanks. 🙏
In his proclamation for National Public Health Week, President Joe Biden said, “During National Public Health Week, we celebrate the life-saving care of public health professionals who work tirelessly to promote our country’s health, safety, and well-being. We recognize that the healthier Americans are as individuals, the stronger we are as a Nation.” Read the entire proclamation: https://lnkd.in/efg6WtyG Take part in tons of exciting events hosted by APHA and others around the country: NPHW.org/Events

Today marks the beginning of National Public Health Week (NPHW) 🙌🏼🙌🏼 As a public health professional, I am heartened by President Biden's proclamation regarding NPHW, emphasizing "that the healthier Americans are as individuals, the stronger we are as a nation." Public health encompasses a holistic perspective on health and healthcare; it encompasses where we live, work, play, etc. It embraces an upstream approach, creating and implementing equitable systems and policies to foster healthier communities for all populations. This year's theme, "We are all public health," aptly underscores this notion. "Public health is more than just healthcare. It involves the measures we take to ensure our neighborhoods and environment are free from pollution. It's about ensuring the safety of our food and water. It's also about the relationships we cultivate in our communities. We are all interconnected. By uniting to support public health, all of us—individuals, families, communities, and the public health sector—can realize the objectives of public health."
