HUD's Office of Lead Hazard Control and Healthy Homes (OLHCHH) has published a request for information about the idea of moving a significant portion of the office's lead hazard reduction grants to a formula funding approach. The National Safe and Healthy Housing Coalition (NSHHC) is hosting three collaborative discussion sessions to provide space for their members and others, including state and local health departments, to consider HUD's new proposal. The sessions will provide a platform for discussion of HUD's proposal, the questions in the request for information, and how it may affect communities. If you have any interest or questions about the formula funding proposal, we strongly encourage you to attend one of the sessions! To get registration information on the sessions (first of which starts Friday, October 18), go to https://lnkd.in/eUdveEJM Background: OLHCHH currently awards grants using a competitive process where communities submit applications following a notice of funding opportunity. In the latest budget request that HUD submitted to Congress, OLHCHH requested that Congress allow them to award 80% of lead hazard reduction funds (and corresponding healthy homes supplemental funds) using a formula. This means that communities would not have to submit a competitive application – funding would simply go to those that qualify. 20% of the funding would remain competitive grants. Congress has not yet given HUD the approval to do this. While waiting, OLHCHH published the request for information to hear feedback from relevant parties about the idea and how they should design the program. Comments are due on November 15, 2024.

Out today! #CSTE and the Big Cities Health Coalition ’s 2024 Epidemiology Capacity Assessment. The reports outline the unmet applied epidemiology workforce and capacity needs across the U.S. within state, territorial, and big cities health departments. The ability of the U.S. public health system to protect us from current and emerging health threats is at stake. The capacity to deliver essential epidemiology public health services for the U.S. has declined — and is in danger of declining further due to lack of sustained federal funding, especially with the end of COVID-19 funding.
