Writer & storyteller. I use LinkedIn primarily to advertise my complete unemployability and ensure I don't accidentally end up with a job.
There are two interesting things about starships 1. they don't exist 2. they never will exist Either we're stuck at around 2% to 5% of lightspeed, or we're awaiting a major paradigm shift in the sciences that will make travelling to other stars in a metal hulled space boat about as realistic as flying in a chariot of the gods. But that's ok, because we don't love the starship as a realistic depicition of space travel. In this weekend's video essay I chart the genealogy of the starship, how the idea was born, how it has changed, and what it means to us today. Link - https://lnkd.in/duTsdHYm WARNING : contains a LOT of warp speed and hyperspace effects
Starships will never exist. Except in dreams.

This week, Maritime at RISE had the pleasure of participating in an inspiring study trip as part of a collaborative project, where we networked with the University of Southeast Norway (USN). The timing could not have been better, as we had the opportunity to visit the students' one-day fair where they exhibited their final projects. It was great to share their enthusiasm and foresight. We also had an impressive tour of the USN 360 simulator, where some of us got to try our hand at operating a ship accompanied by music from Titanic and Pirates of the Caribbean. Some got seasick, others laughed delightedly, and although the floor was firm and solid, several swayed or almost fell. Another highlight was our field trip to Massterly and their Remote-Control Center. This high-tech and connected land-based control center monitors three fully autonomous and battery-powered cargo ships. It was fascinating to hear about the many challenges that have gone into getting the ships from concept to fully autonomous operation. So far, a small crew is required on board due to regulations, but step by step this will change. CEO Tom Eysto explained in an educational way that regulations can be a big challenge. He compared the acceptable risk on land (trucks meeting on a highway at a relative speed of 160 km/h with only a few meters of distance) with a ship running autonomously at 8 knots (equivalent to about 15 km/h) with plenty of distance, multiple backup processes, systems and monitoring. Thought-provoking!

Grad Week continues! Navigating Adulting #4: Live with Integrity. Living with integrity is more than doing the right thing, even when no one is watching. It requires the courage to have honest, consistent, open communication -- even when things aren't going as planned. It is being accountable and reliable, respecting yourself and others by carrying out your responsibilities, and expressing gratitude when others help you. It is managing through chaos with patience and flexibility, and helping those in need. Why does it matter? Because when people live with Integrity, the world is a better place, no matter where you are. #Space2Fail #Space2Learn #Space4Integrity

Helping businesses plan unforgettable events that inspire & engage | Events Made Simple | Team Building Activities | Conferences & Meetings | Exceptional Venues | Stress-Free Event Planning
It might just look like any empty drinks bottle at first ... But look at little closer ... Tap in to the depths of your imagination ... And you'll see that the sky really is the limit here! Here are the lovely team from Barnston Buddies, pictured back at Thornton Hall Hotel & Spa in May, working on their rockets for our Rocket Science team-building activity. 🚀🚀🚀 The initial part of this challenge is not just about creating a rocket design that looks great - you'll also have to choose and assemble your materials wisely to ensure that your finished rocket is as aerodynamic and streamlined as possible. Next, test your teamwork and decision-making skills at the launchpad. Select the PSI pressure at which your rocket will be launched (will you play it safe or take a risk?) and hold your breath for the countdown ... 3 ... 2 ... 1 Will your team's rocket travel the furthest? There's only one way to find out ... To book Rocket Science 🚀🧪for your next corporate event, visit https://lnkd.in/eWVsvpJ5 or drop me a message to find out more. #EventsMadeSimple #UKEvents #CorporateEvents #CorporateEventsUK #UKCorporateEvents #TeamBuilding #TeamBuildingActivity #TeamBuildingChallenge #TeamChallenge #RocketScience #RocketBuilding #RocketLaunch
