#TBT Today, we shine a spotlight on the inspiring work of #artist Nereus Patrick Cheo (NEPAC) from Cameroon. In 2006, NEPAC’s artistic contributions were showcased as part of our CreativeVoices initiative, featured on PBS through the Foreign Exchange program hosted by Fareed Zakaria. This program provided a profound, global perspective on the most pressing international issues. As the Artistic and Project Coordinator of Cameroon Association for the Protection and Education of the Child (CAPEC), NEPAC worked with vulnerable children and women, focusing on orphans, street children, and the underprivileged in Cameroon. CAPEC offers vital education, and protection, support, empowering those who need it most. The #arts are essential for #children’s #development, fostering creativity, emotional intelligence, and cognitive skills. They provide an outlet for self-expression, enhance problem-solving abilities, and promote social and cultural awareness. 🌟 🌍 This year’s #WorldChildrensDay highlights the theme “Inclusion, for every child”, reminding us that every child, regardless of their background, skin tone, religion, or nationality, deserves equal opportunities to dream, grow, and thrive. Today and every day, let’s give #children the #freedom to embrace their #childhood —encouraging their #creativity to flourish through #exploration, the #arts, and boundless #imagination. 💫 🎨 #art4development #AfricanArt #africanartists #artseducation #steameducation #childdevelopment #UN #sdg3 #artstherapy #artheals #peace

Today, on the Day of the African Child, we celebrate the incredible resilience, dreams, and potential of children across Africa. This day not only commemorates the bravery of students during the Soweto Uprising of 1976 but also serves as a powerful reminder of the ongoing need for education, equality, and protection for all children. Every child deserves the opportunity to thrive, learn, and grow in a safe and supportive environment. Despite significant progress, many African children still face challenges such as limited access to quality education, healthcare, and basic human rights. It's our collective responsibility to address these issues and work towards a future where every African child can achieve their fullest potential. Let’s take this opportunity to amplify the voices of African children, advocate for their rights, and invest in their education and well-being. By empowering the youth, we are building a stronger, more prosperous continent. Today and every day, let’s stand together for the rights and well-being of African children. Their future is our future. #DayOfTheAfricanChild #EducationForAll #FutureLeaders #ChildRights #Empowerment #SustainableDevelopment

HISTORY OF THE DAY OF THE AFRICAN CHILD: Every year, June 16 have been observed as the International Day of the African Child. It is recognized as a working holiday throughout Africa. This day was designated in 1991 by the African Union and annually, events are organized to promote children's rights and wellbeing all over Africa. The date honors memories of students who were massacred in Soweto, South Africa, in 1976 for protesting against education injustice and inequality during the apartheid regime. On that fateful day of 1976, hundreds of young students were shot and the most famous to remember was little Hector Pieterson. Thousands of young students like you and me laid down their lives for the cause of freedom in South Africa. Because the rights of children have not been promoted in many African countries like Liberia, hundreds of children still die from starvation, diseases, war, traumatization, ignorance, etc. By adopting this day as International Day of the African Child, the African Union has drawn attention to the plight, not only of children in South Africa, but also to the plight of children in Liberia, Sierra Leone, Guinea, This Charter, which came into force in November 1999 is the first regional treaty on the rights of the child and complements the African Charter on Human and People's rights as well as the United Nations convention on The Rights of the Child. On the 16th of June every year, governments, NGOs, international organizations and other stakeholders gather to discuss the challenges and opportunities facing the full realization of the rights of children. They also host events to create awareness of children's rights. The focus for this year's celebration is 'EDUCATION FOR ALL CHILDREN IN AFRICA: THE TIME IS NOW." As a youth organization, Leading Youths to Foster Transformation in Africa (LYFT-Africa) will gather approximately 100 kids from the Kindergarten and Elementary level in commemoration of the International Day Of The African Child (IDAC). As we are gathering today to participate in this year's event, we are appealing to all youths to safety their emotional intelligence to take this year's theme serious and ensure the education of all children, including the ones in your communities who do not got to school and watch you take your children to school. On the 16th of June 1976, thousands of students in Soweto, South Africa peacefully demonstrated against low-quality education and a government directive that made Afrikaans a mandatory language of instruction in learning institutions. These unarmed students were met with tear gas and live ammunition. Hundreds of children died that day. In 1991, the Organization of African Unity, now the African Union, instituted the International Day of the African Child in remembrance of the children who died during the Soweto Youth Uprising and to serve as an annual reminder to continually advocate for the rights and well-being of children. Today, let's take some time to review Chapter 1 of the African Charter on the Rights and Welfare of the Child and reflect on: 1) How far we've come as a continent and respective African Union Member States in fulfilling our obligation to the next generation. 2) What still needs to be done to ensure that the well-being of children all over the continent, and worldwide, is guaranteed. 3) The responsibility we, as individuals, have in protecting and uplifting children regardless of their, or their parents'/guardians', "race, ethnic group, colour, sex, language, religion, political or other opinion, national and social origin, fortune, birth or other status" (African Charter on the Rights and Welfare of the Child, Art. 3). 📜 African Union Charter: https://lnkd.in/dSd8-GsQ 📚 Sources: African Union [AU]. The Day of the African Child 16th June 2024: “Education for All Children in Africa: The Time is Now” The commemoration of the African Child not only reminds us of the legacy of courage and sacrifice left by the young souls who stood up for their rights in Soweto, South Africa in 1976. It also reminds us that education is a fundamental right for every child globally, not a privilege. #WILPF stands by African children and commits to ensuring every child grows up in peace, with protected rights and equal opportunities. We must eliminate obstacles hindering their development and fulfillment. Today, more than ever, we must address poverty, conflict, homelessness, discrimination, and injustice affecting children. Investing in their education, health, and well-being contributes to a fairer and more peaceful future. The objective of this Day concerning the Rights of Children, and Education as the African Union asserts, is to provide an opportunity to reaffirm the commitment to quality, inclusive, and equitable education for all African children. A call to the African States to reinforce their legislative, administrative, budgetary, and judicial measures undertaken to realize the right to education, including early childhood education. #internationaldayofanAfricanchild #AfricanChild #childreneducation #YearOfEducation #Education4All #AfricanCommitteeofExpertsontheRightsandWelfareoftheChild Women's International League for Peace and Freedom - WILPF

https://lnkd.in/d5DDNSYF 2/3 We filmed this video in Kabwe, Zambia for Kindernothilfe e.V. as part of their Time to Talk campaign. This film tells a (day in life) story of Kabwe, who participates in the campaign. The linking element of the film is the artwork, the children produce for the film. It is a painting with a brush or spray cans or similar of "Art. 12" (This is the article in the UN Convention on the rights of the child which is the right of participation). Dialogue Works is a global campaign led by Kindernothilfe and Terre des Hommes, two child rights organizations. It aims to anchor the participation of working children in societal and political processes. The campaign focuses on creating spaces for meaningful participation of working children and youth in international policy debates, building on the previous campaign "It's Time to Talk - Children's Views on Children's Work." Dialogue Works collaborates with Children's Advisory Committees (CACs) to ensure that working children's right to be heard is realised.

Commemorating African Children's Day! Today, we honor African Children's Day, a momentous occasion dedicated to celebrating and advocating for the rights and welfare of children across the African continent. Established in 1991 by the Organization of African Unity (now the African Union), this day marks the Soweto Uprising of 1976, where thousands of South African children marched to demand better education and equal rights. The theme for this year, "Investing in Our Future Means Investing in Our Children," highlights the crucial need for sustained efforts in improving the quality of education, healthcare, and protection for every child. As we reflect on the progress made, we must also recognize the ongoing challenges many children face, from poverty and conflict to lack of access to basic necessities. Let's use this day to reaffirm our commitment to creating a brighter future for the next generation. By investing in children’s education, health, and overall well-being, we are paving the way for a more prosperous and equitable Africa. How You Can Make a Difference? - Support organizations dedicated to child welfare and education. - Advocate for policies that protect children’s rights. - Volunteer your time and skills to mentor or support young people in your community. - Raise awareness about the importance of children's rights and the issues they face. Together, we can ensure that every child has the opportunity to reach their full potential and contribute to a thriving, vibrant Africa. #AfricanChildrensDay #InvestInChildren #FutureLeaders #ChildRights #Africa #Angola

The topic of granting rights to children has sparked a thought-provoking global debate, with some individuals advocating for the complete granting of rights to children, while others express hesitancy in offering children full rights. In this study, my colleague and I presented views of Ghanaian children in a mixed-method study. Please access the report at https://lnkd.in/eiJ-APTe
